⁴⁷The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs. ⁴⁸If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. ⁴⁹But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, ⁵⁰nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. ⁵¹Now this he said not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation; ⁵²and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad. ⁵³So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.

⁵⁴Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples. ⁵⁵Now the passover of the Jews was at hand: and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, to purify themselves. ⁵⁶They sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast? ⁵⁷Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might take him.

⁵⁰Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

⁴⁹But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing

⁵⁰nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish.

⁵¹But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation;

⁵²and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.

⁵³From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him.

⁵⁴Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples.

⁵⁵But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves.

⁵⁶They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast?

⁵⁷Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him.

⁴⁷Then the chief priests and the Pharisees^(A) called a meeting^(B) of the Sanhedrin.^(C)

“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.^(D) ⁴⁸If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

⁴⁹Then one of them, named Caiaphas,^(E) who was high priest that year,^(F) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! ⁵⁰You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”^(G)

⁵¹He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, ⁵²and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.^(H) ⁵³So from that day on they plotted to take his life.^(I)

⁵⁴Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.^(J) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

⁵⁵When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,^(K) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing^(L) before the Passover. ⁵⁶They kept looking for Jesus,^(M) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” ⁵⁷But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.
