John 11:45-57

The Plot to Kill Jesus

⁴⁵Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary,^(A) and had seen what Jesus did,^(B) believed in him.^(C) ⁴⁶But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. ⁴⁷Then the chief priests and the Pharisees^(D) called a meeting^(E) of the Sanhedrin.^(F)

“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.^(G) ⁴⁸If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

⁴⁹Then one of them, named Caiaphas,^(H) who was high priest that year,^(I) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! ⁵⁰You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”^(J)

⁵¹He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, ⁵²and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.^(K) ⁵³So from that day on they plotted to take his life.^(L)

⁵⁴Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.^(M) Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

⁵⁵When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,^(N) many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing^(O) before the Passover. ⁵⁶They kept looking for Jesus,^(P) and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?” ⁵⁷But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.

Job 15:17-35

¹⁷“Listen to me and I will explain to you;
    let me tell you what I have seen,^(A)
¹⁸what the wise have declared,
    hiding nothing received from their ancestors^(B)
¹⁹(to whom alone the land^(C) was given
    when no foreigners moved among them):
²⁰All his days the wicked man suffers torment,^(D)
    the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him.^(E)
²¹Terrifying sounds fill his ears;^(F)
    when all seems well, marauders attack him.^(G)
²²He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness;^(H)
    he is marked for the sword.^(I)
²³He wanders about^(J) for food like a vulture;^(K)
    he knows the day of darkness^(L) is at hand.^(M)
²⁴Distress and anguish^(N) fill him with terror;^(O)
    troubles overwhelm him, like a king^(P) poised to attack,
²⁵because he shakes his fist^(Q) at God
    and vaunts himself against the Almighty,^(R)
²⁶defiantly charging against him
    with a thick, strong shield.^(S)

²⁷“Though his face is covered with fat
    and his waist bulges with flesh,^(T)
²⁸he will inhabit ruined towns
    and houses where no one lives,^(U)
    houses crumbling to rubble.^(V)
²⁹He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure,^(W)
    nor will his possessions spread over the land.^(X)
³⁰He will not escape the darkness;^(Y)
    a flame^(Z) will wither his shoots,^(AA)
    and the breath of God’s mouth^(AB) will carry him away.^(AC)
³¹Let him not deceive^(AD) himself by trusting what is worthless,^(AE)
    for he will get nothing in return.^(AF)
³²Before his time^(AG) he will wither,^(AH)
    and his branches will not flourish.^(AI)
³³He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes,^(AJ)
    like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.^(AK)
³⁴For the company of the godless^(AL) will be barren,
    and fire will consume^(AM) the tents of those who love bribes.^(AN)
³⁵They conceive trouble^(AO) and give birth to evil;^(AP)
    their womb fashions deceit.”
