34 and He said, “Where have you laid him?” They *said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus (A)wept. 36 So (B)the Jews were saying, “See how He (C)loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could this man, who (D)opened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also [a]kept this man from dying?”

38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a (E)cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus *said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, “Lord, by this time [b]there will be a stench, for he has been dead (F)four days.” 40 Jesus *said to her, (G)Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the (H)stone. And Jesus (I)raised His eyes, and said, (J)Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, (K)because of the [c]people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that (L)You sent Me.” 43 And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 Out came the man who had died, (M)bound hand and foot with wrappings, and (N)his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

45 (O)Therefore many of the Jews (P)who came to Mary, and (Q)saw what He had done, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went to the (R)Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Conspiracy to Kill Jesus

47 Therefore (S)the chief priests and the Pharisees (T)convened a (U)council meeting, and they were saying, “What are we [d]doing in regard to the fact that this man is performing many [e](V)signs? 48 If we let Him go on like this, all the people will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our [f](W)place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, (X)Caiaphas, (Y)who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor are you taking into account that (Z)it is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish instead.” 51 Now he did not say this [g]on his own, but (AA)as he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also (AB)gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they (AC)planned together to kill Him.

54 Therefore Jesus (AD)no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, into a city called (AE)Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.
