Parable of the Good Shepherd

10 “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up from some other place [on the stone wall], that one is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep [the protector and provider]. 3 The [a]doorkeeper opens [the gate] for this man, and the sheep hear his voice and pay attention to it. And [knowing that they listen] he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out [to pasture]. 4 When he has brought all his own sheep outside, he walks on ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice and recognize his call. 5 They will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what He was talking about.

7 So Jesus said again, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, I am [b]the Door for the sheep [leading to life]. 8 All who came before Me [as false messiahs and self-appointed leaders] are thieves and robbers, but the [true] sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the Door; anyone who enters through Me will be saved [and will live forever], and will go in and out [freely], and find pasture (spiritual security). 10 The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].

11 [c]I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd [d]lays down His [own] life for the sheep.(A) 12 But the hired man [who merely serves for wages], who is neither the shepherd nor the owner of the sheep, when he sees the wolf coming, deserts the flock and runs away; and the wolf snatches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The man runs because he is a hired hand [who serves only for wages] and is not concerned about the [safety of the] sheep. 14 I am the Good Shepherd, and I know [without any doubt those who are] My own and My own know Me [and have a deep, personal relationship with Me]— 15 even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father—and I lay down My [very own] life [sacrificing it] for the benefit of the sheep. 16 I have [e]other sheep [beside these] that are not of this fold. I must bring those also, and they will listen to My voice and pay attention to My call, and they will become [f]one flock with one Shepherd.(B) 17 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My [own] life so that I may take it back. 18 No one takes it away from Me, but I lay it down voluntarily. I am authorized and have power to lay it down and to give it up, and I am authorized and have power to take it back. This command I have received from My Father.”

19 A division [of opinion] occurred again among the Jews because of these words [of His]. 20 Many of them said, “He has a demon and He is mad [insane—He raves and rambles]. Why listen to Him?” 21 Others were saying, “These are not the words and thoughts of one possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

Jesus Asserts His Deity

22 At that time the [g]Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. 23 It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple [area] in [h]Solomon’s portico. 24 So the Jews surrounded Him and began saying to Him, “How long are You going to keep us in suspense? If You are [really] the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), tell us so plainly and openly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I have told you so, yet you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name testify concerning Me [they are My credentials and the evidence declaring who I am]. 26 But you do not believe Me [so you do not trust and follow Me] because you are not My sheep. 27 The sheep that are My own hear My voice and listen to Me; I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they will never, ever [by any means] perish; and no one will ever snatch them out of My hand. 29 [i]My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater and mightier than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are One [in essence and nature].”

31 Again the Jews picked up stones to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works [and many acts of mercy] from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “We are not going to stone You for a good work, but for blasphemy, because You, a mere man, make Yourself out to be God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods [human judges representing God, not divine beings]’?(C) 35 If He [j]called them gods, men to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be undone or annulled or broken), 36 [if that is true] then do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and set apart for Himself and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I do not do the works of My Father [that is, the miracles that only God could perform], then do not believe Me. 38 But if I am doing them, even if you do not believe Me or have faith in Me, [at least] believe the works [that I do—admit that they are the works of God], so that you may know and keep on knowing [clearly—without any doubt] that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father [that is, I am One with Him].” 39 So they tried again to seize Him, but He eluded their grasp.

40 He went back again across the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He was staying there. 41 Many came to Him, and they were saying, “John did not perform a single sign (attesting miracle), but everything John said about this Man was true and accurate.” 42 And many there believed and confidently trusted in Him [accepting Him as Savior, and following His teaching].

  10. John 10:35 This statement in Ps 82:6 is addressed to the ruling judges of Israel, who were supposed to serve as God’s representatives on earth. Jesus’ argument (v 36) is that since He is in fact proving Himself to be the Father’s representative on earth, He is entitled to be recognized as the Son of God.

Người chăn gọi đích danh từng con chiên mình để dẫn ra ngoài. 4 Khi đã đem chiên ra hết, người chăn đi trước, chiên theo sau, vì chiên quen tiếng người. 5 Chiên không theo người lạ nhưng bỏ chạy, vì chiên không quen tiếng người lạ.” 6 Đức Giê-su dùng ngụ ngôn này nói với họ, nhưng họ không hiểu Ngài ngụ ý gì.

7 Nên Đức Giê-su tiếp: “Thật vậy, Ta bảo các ngươi: Chính Ta là cửa của chuồng chiên. 8 Tất cả những kẻ đến trước Ta đều là trộm cướp, nhưng chiên không nghe theo họ. 9 Chính Ta là cửa: Ai qua Ta mà vào sẽ được cứu. Người ấy vào, ra và tìm được đồng cỏ. 10 Kẻ trộm chỉ đến để cướp, giết và hủy diệt; còn Ta đã đến để chiên được sống và sống sung mãn.

11 Ta là người chăn nhân từ. Người chăn nhân từ hy sinh tính mạng vì đàn chiên. 12 Kẻ chăn thuê không phải là người chăn; chiên không thuộc về nó, nên thấy muông sói đến nó bỏ chiên chạy trốn; muông sói vồ bắt và đuổi chiên tan lạc. 13 Vì là kẻ chăn thuê, nên nó chẳng quan tâm gì đến chiên.

14 Ta là người chăn nhân từ, Ta biết chiên Ta và chiên Ta biết Ta, 15 cũng như Cha biết Ta và Ta biết Cha vậy. Ta hy sinh tính mạng mình vì chiên. 16 Ta còn có những chiên khác không thuộc bầy này, Ta cũng phải đem chúng về nữa, và chúng sẽ nghe theo tiếng Ta. Như vậy, sẽ chỉ có một đàn chiên và một người chăn. 17 Cha đã yêu thương Ta chính vì Ta chịu hy sinh tính mạng, rồi sau được lấy lại. 18 Không ai lấy được tính mạng Ta, nhưng chính Ta tự hiến. Ta có quyền hy sinh tính mạng và có quyền lấy lại. Đây là mạng lệnh Ta nhận từ Cha Ta.”

19 Người Do Thái lại chia phe nghịch nhau vì những lời ấy. 20 Trong vòng họ có nhiều người nói: “Hắn ta bị quỷ ám, điên rồi, các anh nghe hắn làm gì!” 21 Một số khác lại bảo: “Người bị quỷ ám không thể nói được những lời lẽ ấy? Quỷ làm sao mở mắt người mù?”

22 Lúc ấy nhằm lễ Cung Hiến[a] tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. Trời vào tiết đông, 23 Đức Giê-su đang đi dạo trong khuôn viên đền thờ, dưới hành lang Sa-lô-môn. 24 Người Do Thái tụ họp quanh Ngài mà hỏi: “Ông để chúng tôi hoang mang cho đến bao giờ? Nếu quả thật ông là Chúa Cứu Thế, hãy nói hẳn ra cho chúng tôi đi!”

25 Đức Giê-su đáp: “Ta bảo các ngươi rồi mà các ngươi vẫn không tin! Những công việc Ta nhân danh Cha Ta thực hiện, chính là bằng chứng cho Ta; 26 thế mà các ngươi cũng không tin, chỉ vì các ngươi không phải là chiên của Ta! 27 Chiên Ta nghe tiếng Ta, Ta biết chúng và chúng theo Ta. 28 Ta ban cho chúng sự sống vĩnh phúc, chúng chẳng hư mất bao giờ, và không ai bắt chúng khỏi tay Ta. 29 Cha Ta là Đấng vĩ đại hơn tất cả đã ban cho Ta và không ai có thể bắt nổi chúng khỏi tay Cha.[b] 30 Ta với Cha là một.”

31 Mấy người Do Thái lại lượm đá để ném Ngài. 32 Đức Giê-su bảo họ: “Những việc lành Ta đã làm đều từ Cha mà đến, vậy thì các ngươi ném đá Ta vì việc gì?”

33 Người Do Thái đáp: “Chúng tôi không ném đá ông vì việc lành ông làm nhưng vì ông phạm thượng: Ông là người mà tự cho mình là Đức Chúa Trời!”

34 Đức Giê-su đáp: “Kinh Luật các ngươi chẳng đã có câu: ‘Ta đã phán: Các ngươi là các thần,’ hay sao? 35 Nếu Đức Chúa Trời đã gọi những kẻ được Lời Ngài phán đến là thần và Kinh Thánh không thể bãi bỏ được, 36 thì Đấng được Cha biệt riêng ra thánh và sai đến trần gian chỉ nói: Ta là Con Đức Chúa Trời, tại sao các ngươi tố cáo Người là phạm thượng? 37 Nếu Ta không làm những công việc của Cha Ta, thì các ngươi đừng tin Ta. 38 Còn nếu Ta làm, thì dù các ngươi không tin Ta, hãy tin công việc Ta, để các ngươi hiểu rằng Cha ở trong Ta và Ta ở trong Cha.” 39 Họ lại tìm cách bắt Ngài, nhưng Ngài thoát khỏi tay họ.

40 Ngài lại ra đi, qua bên kia sông Giô-đanh, đến nơi Giăng đã làm phép báp-tem trước đây và ở lại đó. 41 Nhiều người đến với Ngài nói rằng: “Giăng không làm một dấu lạ nào, nhưng mọi điều Giăng đã nói về người này đều đúng cả!” 42 Tại đó có nhiều người tin Ngài.

10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.(A) 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.(B) 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.(C) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.(D) 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.(E) 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech,(F) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.(G)

7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am(H) the gate(I) for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me(J) are thieves and robbers,(K) but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,(L) and have it to the full.(M)

11 “I am(N) the good shepherd.(O) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(P) 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.(Q) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd;(R) I know my sheep(S) and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father(T)—and I lay down my life for the sheep.(U) 16 I have other sheep(V) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock(W) and one shepherd.(X) 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life(Y)—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.(Z) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”(AA)

19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided.(AB) 20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed(AC) and raving mad.(AD) Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.(AE) Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”(AF)

Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[b] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.(AG) 24 The Jews(AH) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”(AI)

25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you,(AJ) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,(AK) 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.(AL) 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,(AM) and they follow me.(AN) 28 I give them eternal life,(AO) and they shall never perish;(AP) no one will snatch them out of my hand.(AQ) 29 My Father, who has given them to me,(AR) is greater than all[c];(AS) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(AT)

31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,(AU) 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”(AV)

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law,(AW) ‘I have said you are “gods”’[d]?(AX) 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God(AY) came—and Scripture cannot be set aside(AZ)— 36 what about the one whom the Father set apart(BA) as his very own(BB) and sent into the world?(BC) Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?(BD) 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.(BE) 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”(BF) 39 Again they tried to seize him,(BG) but he escaped their grasp.(BH)

40 Then Jesus went back across the Jordan(BI) to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, 41 and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign,(BJ) all that John said about this man was true.”(BK) 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.(BL)

10 Amen, amen säger jag er: Den som inte går in i fårfållan genom dörren utan tar sig in på något annat ställe, han är en tjuv och en rövare. 2 Men den som går in genom dörren är fårens herde. 3 För honom öppnar dörrvaktaren, och fåren lyssnar till hans röst, och han kallar på sina får och nämner dem med deras namn och för ut dem. 4 När han har fört ut alla sina får, går han före dem, och fåren följer honom, därför att de känner igen hans röst. 5 Men en främling följer de inte, utan flyr bort från honom, därför att de inte känner igen främlingars röst." 6 Denna liknelse framställde Jesus för dem, men de förstod inte vad det var han talade om.

7 Då sade Jesus än en gång: "Amen, amen säger jag er: Jag är dörren till fåren. 8 Alla som har kommit före mig är tjuvar och rövare, men fåren har inte lyssnat till dem. 9 Jag är dörren. Den som går in genom mig skall bli frälst, och han skall gå in och gå ut och finna bete. 10 Tjuven kommer bara för att stjäla, slakta och döda. Jag har kommit för att de skall ha liv, ja, liv i överflöd.

11 Jag är den gode herden. Den gode herden ger sitt liv för fåren. 12 Den som är lejd och inte är en herde med egna får, han överger fåren och flyr, när han ser vargen komma. Och vargen river dem och skingrar hjorden. 13 Den som är lejd bryr sig inte om fåren. 14 Jag är den gode herden, och jag känner mina får, och mina får känner mig, 15 liksom Fadern känner mig och jag känner Fadern, och jag ger mitt liv för fåren. 16 Jag har också andra får, som inte hör till den här fållan.[a] Dem måste jag också leda, och de kommer att lyssna till min röst. Så skall det bli en hjord och en herde. 17 Fadern älskar mig därför att jag ger mitt liv för att sedan ta det tillbaka. 18 Ingen tar det ifrån mig, utan jag ger det av fri vilja. Jag har makt att ge det, och jag har makt att ta det tillbaka. Det budet har jag fått av min Fader."

19 För de ordens skull uppstod det på nytt delade meningar bland judarna. 20 Många av dem sade: "Han har en ond ande och är från sina sinnen. Varför hör ni på honom?" 21 Andra sade: "Sådana ord kommer inte från en som är besatt. Inte kan en ond ande öppna ögonen på blinda."

Jesu enhet med Fadern

22 Nu inföll tempelinvigningens högtid[b] i Jerusalem. Det var vinter, 23 och Jesus gick omkring i Salomos pelarhall i templet. 24 Då samlades judarna omkring honom och frågade: "Hur länge vill du hålla oss i ovisshet? Om du är Messias, så säg det öppet till oss!" 25 Jesus svarade: "Jag har sagt er det, och ni tror det inte. Gärningarna som jag gör i min Faders namn vittnar om mig. 26 Men ni tror inte, därför att ni inte hör till mina får. 27 Mina får lyssnar till min röst, och jag känner dem, och de följer mig. 28 Jag ger dem evigt liv, och de skall aldrig någonsin gå förlorade, och ingen skall rycka dem ur min hand. 29 Vad min Fader har gett mig är större än allt, och ingen kan rycka dem ur min Faders hand. 30 Jag och Fadern är ett."

31 Än en gång tog judarna upp stenar för att stena honom. 32 Jesus sade till dem: "Många goda gärningar från Fadern har jag låtit er se. För vilken av dem vill ni stena mig?" 33 Judarna svarade: "Det är inte för någon god gärning vi vill stena dig, utan därför att du hädar och gör dig själv till Gud, du som är en människa." 34 Jesus svarade dem: "Står det inte skrivet i er lag:[c] Jag har sagt att ni är gudar? 35 Om han nu kallar dem som fick Guds ord för gudar - och Skriften kan inte göras om intet - 36 hur kan ni då säga till honom, som Fadern har helgat och sänt till världen: Du hädar, därför att jag sade: Jag är Guds Son. 37 Om jag inte gör min Faders gärningar, så tro mig inte. 38 Men om jag gör dem, så tro på gärningarna, om ni inte kan tro på mig. Då skall ni inse och förstå att Fadern är i mig och jag i Fadern." 39 De försökte gripa honom igen, men han drog sig undan och gick bort från dem.

40 Sedan begav han sig återigen till det ställe på andra sidan Jordan, där Johannes tidigare hade varit när han döpte. Där stannade han. 41 Många kom till honom, och de sade: "Johannes gjorde visserligen inte något tecken, men allt vad han sade om Jesus var sant." 42 Och många kom där till tro på honom.
