¹⁹ Again the Jews were divided because of these words.^(A)

¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided.^(A)

³ for you are still fleshly. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling^[a] among you, are you not fleshly and behaving according to human inclinations?^(A)

⁷ When he said this, a dissension began between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. ⁸ (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection or angel or spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge all three.)^{(A) 9} Then a great clamor arose, and certain scribes of the Pharisees’ group stood up and contended, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”^{(B) 10} When the dissension became violent, the tribune, fearing that they would tear Paul to pieces, ordered the soldiers to go down, take him by force, and bring him into the barracks.^(C)

⁴ But the residents of the city were divided: some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.^(A)

Division among the People

⁴⁰ When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.” ⁴¹ Others said, “This is the Messiah.”^[a] But some asked, “Surely the Messiah^[b] does not come from Galilee, does he?^{(A) 42} Has not the scripture said that the Messiah^[c] is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”^{(B) 43} So there was a division in the crowd because of him.

¹⁸ For, to begin with, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.^(A)

⁵¹ Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!^{(A) 52} From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; ⁵³ they will be divided:

Not Peace, but a Sword

³⁴ “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace but a sword.^(A)
