^9 (A)The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. ¹⁰ He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet ^(B)the world did not know him. ¹¹ He came to ^(C)his own,^[a] and ^(D)his own people^{[b] (E)}did not receive him.

^3 (A)All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. ^4 (B)In him was life,^[a] and ^(C)the life was the light of men. ^5 (D)The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath

5 After this there was a ^(A)feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

² Now there is in Jerusalem by ^(B)the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic^[a] called Bethesda,^[b] which has five roofed colonnades. ³ In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and ^(C)paralyzed.^{[c] 5} One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. ⁶ When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” ⁷ The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” ⁸ Jesus said to him, ^(D)“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” ^9 (E)And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

^(F)Now that day was the Sabbath. ¹⁰ So the Jews^[d] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and ^(G)it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” ¹¹ But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” ¹² They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” ¹³ Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for ^(H)Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. ¹⁴ Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! ^(I)Sin no more, ^(J)that nothing worse may happen to you.” ¹⁵ The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. ¹⁶ And this was why the Jews ^(K)were persecuting Jesus, ^(L)because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

¹³ They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. ^14 (A)Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. ^15 (B)So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” ¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not ^(C)from God, ^(D)for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, ^(E)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And ^(F)there was a division among them. ¹⁷ So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, ^(G)“He is a prophet.”

^18 (H)The Jews^[a] did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight ¹⁹ and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” ²⁰ His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. ²¹ But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” ²² (His parents said these things ^(I)because they feared the Jews, for ^(J)the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should ^(K)confess Jesus^[b] to be Christ, ^(L)he was to be put out of the synagogue.) ²³ Therefore his parents said, ^(M)“He is of age; ask him.”

³⁵ So Jesus said to them, ^(A)“The light is among you ^(B)for a little while longer. ^(C)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness ^(D)overtake you. ^(E)The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. ³⁶ While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become ^(F)sons of light.”

The Unbelief of the People

When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.

^34 (A)O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that ^(B)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! ^(C)How often would I have ^(D)gathered ^(E)your children together ^(F)as a hen gathers her brood ^(G)under her wings, and ^(H)you were not willing! ³⁵ Behold, ^(I)your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ^(J)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
