⁹ The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.^[a](A)

⁴⁶ I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness.^(A)

⁸ Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because^[a] the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.^(A)

⁴ in him was life,^[a] and the life was the light of all people.^(A)

⁷ He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.

⁴ But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief;^{(A) 5} for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. ⁶ So, then, let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober,^{(B) 7} for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night.^(C)

²⁰ And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know him who is true;^[a] and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.^(A)

⁶ Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.^(A)

³² Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
