⁴⁹ Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,^(A) you are the Son of God;^(B) you are the king of Israel.”^(C)

⁵⁰ Jesus said, “You believe^[a] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” ⁵¹ He then added, “Very truly I tell you,^[b] you^[c] will see ‘heaven open,^(D) and the angels of God ascending and descending^(E) on’^[d] the Son of Man.”^(F)

²⁸ Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

²⁹ Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed;^(A) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”^(B)

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

³⁰ Jesus performed many other signs^(C) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.^{(D) 31} But these are written that you may believe^[a](E) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,^(F) and that by believing you may have life in his name.^(G)
