⁴⁴ Now Philip was from Bethsaida,^(A) the hometown of Andrew and Peter. ⁴⁵ Philip found Nathanael^(B) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets^(C)): Jesus the son of Joseph,^(D) from Nazareth.”^(E)

⁴⁶ “Can anything good^(F) come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him.

“Come and see,” Philip answered.

⁴⁷ Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite^(G) in whom there is no deceit.”

⁴⁸ “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

⁴⁹ “Rabbi,”^(H) Nathanael replied, “You are the Son^(I) of God; you are the King of Israel!” ^(J)

⁵⁰ Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” ⁵¹ Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God^(K) ascending and descending^(L) on the Son of Man.”^(M)

The First Sign: Turning Water into Wine

2 On the third day a wedding took place in Cana^(A) of Galilee.^(B) Jesus’s mother^(C) was there, ² and Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding as well. ³ When the wine ran out, Jesus’s mother told him, “They don’t have any wine.”

⁴ “What has this concern of yours to do with me,^[a](D) woman?”^(E) Jesus asked. “My hour has not yet come.”

⁵ “Do whatever he tells you,” his mother told the servants.

⁶ Now six stone water jars had been set there for Jewish purification.^(F) Each contained twenty or thirty gallons.^[b]

⁷ “Fill the jars with water,” Jesus told them. So they filled them to the brim. ⁸ Then he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the headwaiter.”^[c] And they did.

⁹ When the headwaiter tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom ¹⁰ and told him, “Everyone sets out the fine wine first, then, after people are drunk, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now.”

¹¹ Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana^(G) of Galilee.^(H) He revealed^(I) his glory,^(J) and his disciples believed in him.

¹² After this, he went down to Capernaum,^(K) together with his mother, his brothers,^(L) and his disciples, and they stayed there only a few days.

Cleansing the Temple
