⁴⁰ Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. ⁴¹ The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).^{(A) 42} And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called^(B) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter^[a]).^(C)

Jesus Announces the Good News^(A)

¹⁴ After John^(B) was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee,^(C) proclaiming the good news of God.^{(D) 15} “The time has come,”^(E) he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe^(F) the good news!”^(G)

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

¹⁶ As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ¹⁷ “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” ¹⁸ At once they left their nets and followed him.^(H)
