³³ And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water^(A) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’^(B)

⁵ For John baptized with^[a] water,^(A) but in a few days you will be baptized with^[b] the Holy Spirit.”^(B)

⁵ he saved us,^(A) not because of righteous things we had done,^(B) but because of his mercy.^(C) He saved us through the washing^(D) of rebirth and renewal^(E) by the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he poured out on us^(F) generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,

¹⁶ John answered them all, “I baptize you with^[a] water.^(A) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with^[b] the Holy Spirit and fire.^(B)

¹¹ “I baptize you with^[a] water for repentance.^(A) But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with^[b] the Holy Spirit^(B) and fire.^(C)

² and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit^(A) when^[a] you believed?”

They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

³ So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”

“John’s baptism,” they replied.

⁴ Paul said, “John’s baptism^(B) was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”^{(C) 5} On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.^{(D) 6} When Paul placed his hands on them,^(E) the Holy Spirit came on them,^(F) and they spoke in tongues^[b](G) and prophesied.

³⁴ For the one whom God has sent^(A) speaks the words of God, for God^[a] gives the Spirit^(B) without limit.

¹³ For we were all baptized^(A) by^[a] one Spirit^(B) so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free^(C)—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.^(D)

¹⁵ “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on^(A) them as he had come on us at the beginning.^{(B) 16} Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with^[a] water,^(C) but you will be baptized with^[b] the Holy Spirit.’^(D)
