²⁸ These things were done ^(A)in ^[a]Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

¹⁶ And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. ^17 (A)He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

⁴ Now ^(A)John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was ^(B)locusts and ^(C)wild honey.

John Baptizes Jesus^(A)

^13 (B)Then Jesus came ^(C)from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.

⁸ So they answered him, ^(A)“A hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist.”

And he said, ^(B)“It is Elijah the Tishbite.”

¹⁵ Now when the sons of the prophets who were ^(A)from^[a] Jericho saw him, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him, and bowed to the ground before him.

¹⁶ that the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away ^[a]at Adam, the city that is beside ^(A)Zaretan. So the waters that went down ^(B)into the Sea of the Arabah, ^(C)the Salt Sea, failed, and were cut off; and the people crossed over opposite Jericho. ¹⁷ Then the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; ^(D)and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the people had crossed completely over the Jordan.
