The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.^{(A) 2} He was in the beginning with God. ³ All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being^{(B) 4} in him was life,^[a] and the life was the light of all people.^{(C) 5} The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.

¹⁰ He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him.^{(A) 11} He came to what was his own,^[a] and his own people did not accept him. ¹² But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,^{(B) 13} who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.^(C)

¹⁴ And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son,^[b] full of grace and truth.^(D)

Rivers of Living Water

³⁷ On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me,^{(A) 38} and let the one who believes in me drink. As^[a] the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart^[b] shall flow rivers of living water.’ ”^(B)

¹⁷ So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, ¹⁸ for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.^{(A) 19} So then, you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God,^{(B) 20} built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone;^{[a](C) 21} in him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord,^{(D) 22} in whom you also are built together spiritually^[b] into a dwelling place for God.

⁴ Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and ⁵ like living stones let yourselves be built^[a] into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.^{(A) 6} For it stands in scripture:

⁷ This honor, then, is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,^[b]

⁸ and

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.^(D)

⁹ But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,^[c] in order that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.^(E)
