25 He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I (A)was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, (B)“I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but (C)we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, (D)we do not know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Why, this is (E)an amazing thing! (F)You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that (G)God does not listen to sinners, but (H)if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33 (I)If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, (J)“You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they (K)cast him out.

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in (L)the Son of Man?”[a] 36 He answered, (M)“And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and (N)it is he who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, (O)“For judgment I came into this world, (P)that those who do not see may see, and (Q)those who see may become blind.” 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, (R)“Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, (S)you would have no guilt;[b] but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

I Am the Good Shepherd

10 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. (T)A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” This figure of speech Jesus (U)used with them, but they (V)did not understand what he was saying to them.

So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (W)I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, (X)he will be saved and will go in and out and (Y)find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and (Z)kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 (AA)I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd (AB)lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is (AC)a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and (AD)leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and (AE)scatters them. 13 He flees because (AF)he is a hired hand and (AG)cares nothing for the sheep. 14 (AH)I am the good shepherd. (AI)I know my own and (AJ)my own know me, 15 (AK)just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and (AL)I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And (AM)I have other sheep that are not of this fold. (AN)I must bring them also, and (AO)they will listen to my voice. So there will be (AP)one flock, (AQ)one shepherd. 17 (AR)For this reason the Father loves me, (AS)because (AT)I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 (AU)No one takes it from me, but (AV)I lay it down (AW)of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and (AX)I have authority to take it up again. (AY)This charge I have received from my Father.”

19 (AZ)There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them said, (BA)“He has a demon, and (BB)is insane; why listen to him?”

  1. John 9:35 Some manuscripts the Son of God
  2. John 9:41 Greek you would not have sin

25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”

26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”

27 He answered, “I have told you already(A) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”

28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(B) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(C)

30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(D) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(E) he could do nothing.”

34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(F) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(G)

Spiritual Blindness

35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(H) in the Son of Man?”(I)

36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(J)

37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(K)

38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(L)

39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(M) I have come into this world,(N) so that the blind will see(O) and those who see will become blind.”(P)

40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(Q)

41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(R)

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.(S) The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.(T) The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.(U) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.(V) When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.(W) But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” Jesus used this figure of speech,(X) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.(Y)

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am(Z) the gate(AA) for the sheep. All who have come before me(AB) are thieves and robbers,(AC) but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[b] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,(AD) and have it to the full.(AE)

11 “I am(AF) the good shepherd.(AG) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(AH) 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.(AI) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd;(AJ) I know my sheep(AK) and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father(AL)—and I lay down my life for the sheep.(AM) 16 I have other sheep(AN) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock(AO) and one shepherd.(AP) 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life(AQ)—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.(AR) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”(AS)

19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided.(AT) 20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed(AU) and raving mad.(AV) Why listen to him?”
