And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, (A)“Let him who is without sin among you (B)be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, (C)“Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on (D)sin no more.”]]

I Am the Light of the World

12 (E)Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, (F)“I am the light of the world. Whoever (G)follows me will not (H)walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to him, (I)“You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, (J)my testimony is true, for I know (K)where I came from and (L)where I am going, but (M)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 (N)You judge according to the flesh; (O)I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, (P)my judgment is true, for (Q)it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father[a] who sent me. 17 (R)In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and (S)the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” 19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, (T)“You know neither me nor my Father. (U)If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 These words he spoke in (V)the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but (W)no one arrested him, because (X)his hour had not yet come.

21 So he said to them again, (Y)“I am going away, and (Z)you will seek me, and (AA)you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, (AB)“Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 He said to them, (AC)“You are from below; I am from above. (AD)You are of this world; (AE)I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you (AF)would die in your sins, for (AG)unless you believe that (AH)I am he you will die in your sins.” 25 So they said to him, (AI)“Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. 26 I have much to say about you and much to judge, but (AJ)he who sent me is true, and I declare (AK)to the world (AL)what I have heard from him.” 27 They did not understand that (AM)he had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said to them, “When you have (AN)lifted up the Son of Man, (AO)then you will know that (AP)I am he, and that (AQ)I do nothing on my own authority, but (AR)speak just as the Father taught me. 29 And (AS)he who sent me is with me. (AT)He has not left me alone, for (AU)I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” 30 As he was saying these things, (AV)many believed in him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, (AW)“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will (AX)know the truth, and the truth (AY)will set you free.” 33 They answered him, (AZ)“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (BA)everyone who practices sin is a slave[b] to sin. 35 (BB)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (BC)the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet (BD)you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 (BE)I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard (BF)from your father.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil

39 They answered him, (BG)“Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, (BH)“If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now (BI)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth (BJ)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, (BK)“We were not born of sexual immorality. We have (BL)one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, (BM)“If God were your Father, you would love me, for (BN)I came from God and (BO)I am here. (BP)I came not of my own accord, but (BQ)he sent me. 43 (BR)Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot (BS)bear to hear my word. 44 (BT)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. (BU)He was a murderer from the beginning, and (BV)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. (BW)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(A) at her.”(B) Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,”(C) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(D)

Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony

12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(E) the light of the world.(F) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(G)

13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(H)

14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(I) But you have no idea where I come from(J) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(K) I pass judgment on no one.(L) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(M) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(N) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(O)

19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”

“You do not know me or my Father,”(P) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(Q) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(R) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(S) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(T)

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(U) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(V)

22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(W) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(X) you will indeed die in your sins.”

25 “Who are you?” they asked.

“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(Y) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(Z)

27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AA) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AB) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AC) for I always do what pleases him.”(AD) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AE)

Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(AF) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(AG)

33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(AH) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AI) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AJ) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(AK) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AL) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(AM) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b](AN)

39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,”(AO) said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AP) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AQ) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(AR)

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(AS)

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(AT) for I have come here from God.(AU) I have not come on my own;(AV) God sent me.(AW) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(AX) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(AY) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(AZ)
