31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word. 38 I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.”[a]

39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing[b] what Abraham did, 40 but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are indeed doing what your father does.” They said to him, “We are not illegitimate children; we have one father, God himself.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me.

31 Gesù allora disse a quei Giudei che avevano creduto in lui: «Se perseverate nella mia parola, siete veramente miei discepoli; 32 conoscerete la verità e la verità vi farà liberi». 33 Essi gli risposero: «Noi siamo discendenti di Abraamo, e non siamo mai stati schiavi di nessuno; come puoi tu dire: “Voi diverrete liberi”?» 34 Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che chiunque commette il peccato è schiavo del peccato. 35 Ora lo schiavo non dimora per sempre nella casa: il figlio vi dimora per sempre. 36 Se dunque il Figlio vi farà liberi, sarete veramente liberi. 37 So che siete discendenti di Abraamo; ma cercate di uccidermi, perché la mia parola non penetra in voi. 38 Io dico quel che ho visto presso il Padre [mio]; e voi pure fate le cose che avete udite[a] dal padre [vostro] ». 39 Essi gli risposero: «Nostro padre è Abraamo». Gesù disse loro: «Se foste figli di Abraamo, fareste[b] le opere di Abraamo; 40 ora invece cercate di uccidermi, perché vi ho detto la verità[c] che ho udita da Dio; Abraamo non fece così. 41 Voi fate le opere del padre vostro». Essi {dunque} gli dissero: «Noi non siamo nati da fornicazione; abbiamo un solo Padre: Dio». 42 Gesù disse loro: «Se Dio fosse vostro Padre, mi amereste, perché io sono proceduto e vengo da Dio; infatti io non sono venuto da me, ma è lui che mi ha mandato.

31 Da sprach Jesus zu den Juden, die an ihn glaubten: Wenn ihr in meinem Wort bleibt, so seid ihr wahrhaftig meine Jünger,
32 und ihr werdet die Wahrheit erkennen, und die Wahrheit wird euch frei machen!
33 Sie antworteten ihm: Wir sind Abrahams Same[a] und sind nie jemandes Knechte gewesen; wie kannst du da sagen: Ihr sollt frei werden?
34 Jesus antwortete ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Jeder, der die Sünde tut, ist ein Knecht der Sünde.
35 Der Knecht aber bleibt nicht ewig im Haus; der Sohn bleibt ewig.
36 Wenn euch nun der Sohn frei machen wird, so seid ihr wirklich frei.
37 Ich weiß, dass ihr Abrahams Same seid; aber ihr sucht mich zu töten, denn mein Wort findet keinen Raum in euch.
38 Ich rede, was ich bei meinem Vater gesehen habe; so tut auch ihr, was ihr bei eurem Vater gesehen habt.
39 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Abraham ist unser Vater! Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Wenn ihr Abrahams Kinder wärt, so würdet ihr Abrahams Werke tun.
40 Nun aber sucht ihr mich zu töten, einen Menschen, der euch die Wahrheit gesagt hat, die ich von Gott gehört habe; das hat Abraham nicht getan.
41 Ihr tut die Werke eures Vaters! Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wir sind nicht unehelich geboren[b]; wir haben einen Vater: Gott!
42 Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wenn Gott euer Vater wäre, so würdet ihr mich lieben, denn ich bin von Gott ausgegangen und gekommen; denn nicht von mir selbst bin ich gekommen, sondern er hat mich gesandt.

31 Azután Jézus azokhoz fordult, akik hittek benne: „Ha ragaszkodtok a tanításomhoz, engedelmeskedtek a szavamnak, és annak megfelelően éltek, akkor valóban a tanítványaim vagytok. 32 Akkor majd megismeritek az igazságot, az igazság pedig megszabadít titeket.”
33 Azok így válaszoltak: „Mi Ábrahám leszármazottjai vagyunk, és soha nem voltunk rabszolgák! Miért mondod, hogy meg fogunk szabadulni?”
34 Jézus így válaszolt: „Igazán mondom nektek, ha valaki bűnben él, az a bűn rabszolgája. 35 A rabszolga nem marad örökre a családban, csak a fiú, 36 ezért, ha a Fiú megszabadít titeket, akkor valóban szabadok lesztek! Tudom, hogy Ábrahám leszármazottjai vagytok, 37 mégis meg akartok ölni, mert nem fogadjátok el a tanításomat. 38 Én arról beszélek, amit Atyámtól tanultam, és ti is azt teszitek, amit atyátoktól tanultatok.”
39 Azok így feleltek: „A mi ősatyánk Ábrahám!” Jézus azonban ezt válaszolta: „Ha valóban Ábrahám leszármazottjai lennétek, akkor az ő példáját követnétek. 40 De ti meg akartok ölni engem, aki az igazságot mondom nektek, amit Istentől hallottam. Ábrahám nem tett ilyet. 41 Ti valóban azt teszitek, amit atyátok.”
Ők erre így válaszoltak: „Nem vagyunk mi törvénytelen gyermekek! Egy Atyánk van, az Isten!”
