The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now (A)in the Law, Moses commanded us (B)to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said (C)to test him, (D)that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(A) Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap,(B) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(C)

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.
