21 Then He said again to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, and you will die [unforgiven and condemned] in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews were asking [among themselves], “Will He kill Himself? Is that why He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 He said to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. 24 That is why I told you that you will die [unforgiven and condemned] in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am the One [I claim to be], you will die in your sins.”(A) 25 So they said to Him, “Who are You [anyway]?” Jesus replied, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to say and judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I say to the world [only] the things that I have heard from Him.” 27 They did not realize [or have the spiritual insight to understand] that He was speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man [on the cross], you will know then [without any doubt] that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own authority, but I say these things just as My Father taught Me. 29 And He who sent Me is [always] with Me; He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.” 30 As He said these things, [a]many believed in Him.

21 Then He said again to them, “I am going away, and (A)you will look for Me, and (B)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So (C)the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, (D)Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, (E)You are from below, I am from above; (F)you are of this world, (G)I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you (H)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that [a](I)I am, (J)you will die in your sins.” 25 Then they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, [b]What have I even been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to say and to judge regarding you, but (K)He who sent Me is true; and (L)the things which I heard from Him, these I say to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He was speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you (M)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that [c](N)I am, and (O)I do nothing [d]on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; (P)He [e]has not left Me alone, for (Q)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He said these things, (R)many came to believe in Him.

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(A) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(B)

22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(C) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(D) you will indeed die in your sins.”

25 “Who are you?” they asked.

“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(E) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(F)

27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(G) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(H) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(I) for I always do what pleases him.”(J) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(K)
