¹⁵ You judge by human standards;^(A) I pass judgment on no one.^{(B) 16} But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.^{(C) 17} In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.^{(D) 18} I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”^(E)

¹⁹ Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”

“You do not know me or my Father,”^(F) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”^{(G) 20} He spoke these words while teaching^(H) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.^(I) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.^(J)

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

²¹ Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die^(K) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”^(L)

²² This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

²³ But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.^{(M) 24} I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,^(N) you will indeed die in your sins.”

²⁵ “Who are you?” they asked.

“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. ²⁶ “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,^(O) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”^(P)

²⁷ They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. ²⁸ So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up^[a] the Son of Man,^(Q) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.^{(R) 29} The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,^(S) for I always do what pleases him.”^{(T) 30} Even as he spoke, many believed in him.^(U)

Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are

³¹ To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,^(V) you are really my disciples.

⁷ But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate^(A) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.^{(B) 8} When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹ about sin,^(C) because people do not believe in me; ¹⁰ about righteousness,^(D) because I am going to the Father,^(E) where you can see me no longer; ¹¹ and about judgment, because the prince of this world^(F) now stands condemned.

¹² “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.^{(G) 13} But when he, the Spirit of truth,^(H) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.^(I) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. ¹⁴ He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. ¹⁵ All that belongs to the Father is mine.^(J) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
