(A)Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii[a] worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” One of his disciples, (B)Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five (C)barley loaves and two fish, but (D)what are they for so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” (E)Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and (F)when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, (G)“This is indeed (H)the Prophet (I)who is to come into the world!”

15 (J)Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus (K)withdrew again to (L)the mountain by himself.

  1. John 6:7 A denarius was a day's wage for a laborer

Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(A) spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(B)

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(C) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

14 After the people saw the sign(D) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(E) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(F) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(G)
