56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in them. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me lives because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. It isn’t like the bread your ancestors ate, and then they died. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

60 Many of his disciples who heard this said, “This message is harsh. Who can hear it?”

61 Jesus knew that the disciples were grumbling about this and he said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What if you were to see the Human One[a] going up where he was before? 63 The Spirit is the one who gives life and the flesh doesn’t help at all. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 Yet some of you don’t believe.”Jesus knew from the beginning who wouldn’t believe and the one who would betray him. 65 He said, “For this reason I said to you that none can come to me unless the Father enables them to do so.” 66 At this, many of his disciples turned away and no longer accompanied him.

67 Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?”

68 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, where would we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are God’s holy one.”

  1. John 6:62 Or Son of Man

56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(A) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(B) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(C) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(D) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(E)

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(F) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(G) ascend to where he was before!(H) 63 The Spirit gives life;(I) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[a] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(J) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(K) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(L)

66 From this time many of his disciples(M) turned back and no longer followed him.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(N)

68 Simon Peter answered him,(O) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(P) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(Q)

14 The men said to her, “We swear by our own lives to secure yours. If you don’t reveal our mission, we will deal loyally and faithfully with you when the Lord gives us the land.”

The spies escape

15 So she lowered the spies on a rope through the window. Her house was on the outer side of the city wall, and she lived inside the wall. 16 Then she said to them, “Go toward the highlands so that those chasing you don’t run into you. Hide there for three days until those chasing you return. Then you may go on your way.”

17 The men said to her, “We won’t be responsible for this pledge you made us swear 18 unless, when we come into the land, you tie this red woven cord in the window through which you lowered us. Gather your father, your mother, your brothers, and your whole family into the house with you.

14 “Our lives for your lives!”(A) the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully(B) when the Lord gives us the land.”

15 So she let them down by a rope(C) through the window,(D) for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, “Go to the hills(E) so the pursuers(F) will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days(G) until they return, and then go on your way.”(H)

17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath(I) you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord(J) in the window(K) through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family(L) into your house.
