40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who (A)looks on the Son and (B)believes in him (C)should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, (D)“I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, (E)“Is not this Jesus, (F)the son of Joseph, whose father and mother (G)we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me (H)draws him. And (I)I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, (J)‘And they will all be (K)taught by God.’ (L)Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 (M)not that anyone has seen the Father except (N)he who is from God; he (O)has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, (P)whoever believes has eternal life. 48 (Q)I am the bread of life. 49 (R)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and (S)they died. 50 (T)This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it (U)and not die. 51 I am the living bread (V)that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give (W)for the life of the world is (X)my flesh.”

52 The Jews then (Y)disputed among themselves, saying, (Z)“How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (AA)the Son of Man and drink his blood, you (AB)have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood (AC)has eternal life, and (AD)I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood (AE)abides in me, and I in him. 57 As (AF)the living Father (AG)sent me, and (AH)I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 (AI)This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread[a] the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus[b] said these things in the synagogue, as he taught (AJ)at Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 (AK)When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (AL)knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see (AM)the Son of Man (AN)ascending to (AO)where he was before? 63 (AP)It is the Spirit who gives life; (AQ)the flesh is no help at all. (AR)The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But (AS)there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus (AT)knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and (AU)who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you (AV)that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 (AW)After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to (AX)the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (AY)the words of eternal life, 69 and (AZ)we have believed, and have come to know, that (BA)you are (BB)the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, (BC)“Did I not choose you, (BD)the twelve? And yet one of you is (BE)a devil.” 71 He spoke of Judas (BF)the son of Simon Iscariot, for (BG)he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(A) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(B) and I will raise them up at the last day.”

41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(C) whose father and mother we know?(D) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(E)

43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(F) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[a](G) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(H) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(I) 48 I am the bread of life.(J) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(K) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(L) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(M) that came down from heaven.(N) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(O)

52 Then the Jews(P) began to argue sharply among themselves,(Q) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(R) of the Son of Man(S) and drink his blood,(T) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(U) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(V) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(W) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(X) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(Y) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(Z)

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(AA) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(AB) ascend to where he was before!(AC) 63 The Spirit gives life;(AD) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[b] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(AE) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(AF) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(AG)

66 From this time many of his disciples(AH) turned back and no longer followed him.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(AI)

68 Simon Peter answered him,(AJ) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(AK) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(AL)

70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(AM) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(AN) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(AO) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(AP)
