31 (A)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not [a]true. 32 There is (B)another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

Testimony of John the Baptist

33 You have sent messengers to John, and he (C)has testified to the truth. 34 But (D)the testimony I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (E)the lamp that was burning and shining, and you (F)were willing to rejoice for [b]a while in his light.

Testimony of Works

36 But the testimony I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (G)the works which the Father has given Me (H)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (I)has sent Me.

Testimony of the Father

37 And the Father who sent Me, (J)He has testified about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 Also you do not have (K)His word remaining in you, because you do not believe Him whom He (L)sent.

Testimony of the Scripture

39 [c](M)You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is (N)those very Scriptures that testify about Me; 40 and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 (O)I do not receive glory from people; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not [d]receive Me; (P)if another comes in his own name, you will [e]receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you [f](Q)accept [g]glory from one another and you do not seek (R)the [h]glory that is from (S)the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (T)Moses, in whom you have put your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for (U)he wrote about Me. 47 But (V)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Five Thousand Men Fed

After these things (W)Jesus went away to the other side of (X)the Sea of Galilee (or (Y)Tiberias). A large crowd was following Him, because they were watching the [i](Z)signs which He was performing on those who were sick. But (AA)Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. Now (AB)the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. So Jesus, after raising His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, *said to (AC)Philip, “Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?” But He was saying this only to (AD)test him, for He Himself knew what He intended to do. (AE)Philip answered Him, “(AF)Two hundred [j]denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, for each to receive just a little!” One of His (AG)disciples, (AH)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, *said to Him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two (AI)fish; but what are these for so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people recline to eat.” Now there was (AJ)plenty of grass in the place. So the men reclined, about [k](AK)five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and (AL)after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were reclining; likewise also of the (AM)fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, He *said to His (AN)disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve (AO)baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Therefore when the people saw the [l]sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the (AP)Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(A) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(B) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(C) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(D) but I mention it that you may be saved.(E) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(F) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(G) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(H)—testify that the Father has sent me.(I) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(J) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(K) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(L) for you do not believe(M) the one he sent.(N) 39 You study[a] the Scriptures(O) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(P) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(Q) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(R) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(S) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[b]?(T)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(U) on whom your hopes are set.(V) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(W) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(X)

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(Y)

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(Z) he had performed by healing the sick. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(AA) and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Festival(AB) was near.

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(AC) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[c] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(AD) spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(AE)

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(AF) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

14 After the people saw the sign(AG) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(AH)
