Life and Judgment Are Through the Son

24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, (A)he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, (B)but has passed from death into life.

The Shepherd Knows His Sheep

22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple, (C)in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in [a]doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (D)The works that I do in My Father’s name, they (E)bear witness of Me. 26 But (F)you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, [b]as I said to you. 27 (G)My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 (H)My Father, (I)who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 (J)I and My Father are one.”

Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus

Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims

22 Then came the Festival of Dedication[a] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.(C) 24 The Jews(D) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”(E)

25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you,(F) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,(G) 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.(H) 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,(I) and they follow me.(J) 28 I give them eternal life,(K) and they shall never perish;(L) no one will snatch them out of my hand.(M) 29 My Father, who has given them to me,(N) is greater than all[b];(O) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”(P)

The Test of Knowing Christ

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, (A)we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And (B)He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but (C)also for the whole world.

My dear children,(A) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate(B) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,(C) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.(D)

Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.

Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. (A)He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, (B)that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been (C)born of God does not sin, for (D)His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.

The Imperative of Love(E)

10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.

No one who lives in him keeps on sinning.(A) No one who continues to sin has either seen him(B) or known him.(C)

Dear children,(D) do not let anyone lead you astray.(E) The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.(F) The one who does what is sinful is of the devil,(G) because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God(H) appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.(I) No one who is born of God(J) will continue to sin,(K) because God’s seed(L) remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God(M) are and who the children of the devil(N) are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love(O) their brother and sister.(P)
