The Samaritans

39 Now from (A)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “(B)He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to [a]Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One truly is (C)the Savior of the world.”

43 And after (D)the two days, He departed from there for Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that (E)a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, only because (F)they had seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

Healing an Official’s Son

46 Therefore He came again to (G)Cana of Galilee, (H)where He had made the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at (I)Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come (J)from Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and began asking Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see [b](K)signs and (L)wonders, you simply will not believe.” 49 The royal official *said to Him, “[c]Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus *said to him, (M)Go; your son [d]is alive.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went home.

16 And He came to (A)Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, (B)He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and (C)stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

18 (D)The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,
19 (E)To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”

20 And He (F)rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and (G)sat down; and the eyes of all the people in the synagogue were intently directed at Him. 21 Now He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your [a]hearing.” 22 And all the people were [b]speaking well of Him, and admiring the [c]gracious words which were coming from His [d]lips; and yet they were saying, “(H)Is this not Joseph’s son?” 23 And He said to them, “No doubt you will [e]quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! All the miracles that we heard were done (I)in Capernaum, do here in (J)your hometown as well.’” 24 But He said, “Truly I say to you, (K)no prophet is welcome in his hometown.

Teaching at Nazareth

(A)Jesus went out from there and *came into [a](B)His hometown; and His disciples *followed Him. And when the Sabbath came, He began (C)to teach in the synagogue; and [b]the (D)many listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man learn these things, and what is this wisdom that has been given to Him, and such [c]miracles as these performed by His hands? Is this not (E)the carpenter, (F)the son of Mary and brother of [d]James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are (G)His sisters not here with us?” And they took (H)offense at Him. Jesus said to them, (I)A prophet is not dishonored except in [e](J)his hometown and among his own relatives, and in his own household.” And He could not do any [f]miracle there except that He (K)laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He was amazed at their unbelief.

(L)And He was going around the villages, teaching.
