15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(A) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.(B) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(C) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”(D)
21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming(E) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(F) 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(G) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(H) 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come(I) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(J) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit,(K) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)(L) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”(M)
The Disciples Rejoin Jesus
27 Just then his disciples returned(N) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(O) Could this be the Messiah?”(P) 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,(Q) eat something.”
32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat(R) that you know nothing about.”
33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will(S) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(T) 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(U) 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(V) a crop for eternal life,(W) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’(X) is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe
39 Many of the Samaritans from that town(Y) believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”(Z) 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.
42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”(AA)

15 “Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.”
16 “Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.
17 “I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied.
Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband— 18 for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet. 20 So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim,[a] where our ancestors worshiped?”
21 Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. 23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. 24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus told her, “I am the Messiah!”[b]
27 Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?” 28 The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?” 30 So the people came streaming from the village to see him.
31 Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.”
32 But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.”
33 “Did someone bring him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other.
34 Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. 35 You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe[c] for harvest. 36 The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike! 37 You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true. 38 I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.”
Many Samaritans Believe
39 Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!” 40 When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days, 41 long enough for many more to hear his message and believe. 42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.”

What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that (C)you are (D)a prophet. 20 (E)Our fathers worshiped on (F)this mountain, but you say that (G)in Jerusalem is (H)the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, (I)“Woman, believe me, (J)the hour is coming when (K)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 (L)You worship what you do not know; (M)we worship what we know, for (N)salvation is (O)from the Jews. 23 But (P)the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (Q)in spirit and (R)truth, for the Father (S)is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that (T)Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, (U)he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, (V)“I who speak to you am he.”
27 Just then (W)his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man (X)who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, (Y)“Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, (Z)“Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, (AA)“My food is (AB)to do the will of him who sent me and (AC)to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that (AD)the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that (AE)sower and (AF)reaper (AG)may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, (AH)‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap (AI)that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, (AJ)and you have entered into their labor.”
39 Many Samaritans (AK)from that town believed in him (AL)because of (AM)the woman's testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed (AN)because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, (AO)and we know that this is indeed (AP)the Savior (AQ)of the world.”
