The Works of the Flesh

16 Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh.(A) 17 For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want.(B) 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law.(C) 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery,(D) 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21 envy,[a] drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.(E)

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit,(A) and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.(B) 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.(C) They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[a] you want.(D) 18 But if you are led by the Spirit,(E) you are not under the law.(F)

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality,(G) impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.(H) I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.(I)

so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.[a](A) For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit[b] set their minds on the things of the Spirit.[c](B) To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit[d] is life and peace.(C) For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed, it cannot,(D) and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit,[e] since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.(E)

in order that the righteous requirement(A) of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.(B)

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;(C) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.(D) The mind governed by the flesh is death,(E) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life(F) and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;(G) it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh(H) cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh(I) but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.(J) And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(K) they do not belong to Christ.
