Breakfast by the Sea

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the (A)Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, (B)Thomas called the Twin, (C)Nathanael of (D)Cana in Galilee, (E)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [a]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (F)did not know that it was Jesus. Then (G)Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

And He said to them, (H)“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

Therefore (I)that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, (J)“Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

14 This is now (K)the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [b]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [c]love You.”

He said to him, (L)“Feed My lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [d]Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [e]love You.”

(M)He said to him, “Tend My (N)sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [f]Jonah, do you [g]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, (O)You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 (P)Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying (Q)by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, (R)“Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple (S)whom Jesus loved following, (T)who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I [h]will that he remain (U)till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (V)testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

25 (W)And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, (X)I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

Prologue

The former account I made, O (Y)Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, (Z)until the day in which [i]He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit (AA)had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, (AB)to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many [j]infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit Promised

(AC)And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have (AD)heard from Me; (AE)for John truly baptized with water, (AF)but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, (AG)“It is not for you to (AH)know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. (AI)But you shall receive power (AJ)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and (AK)you shall be [k]witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and (AL)Samaria, and to the (AM)end of the earth.”

Jesus Ascends to Heaven(AN)

(AO)Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, (AP)He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them (AQ)in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, (AR)will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room Prayer Meeting

12 (AS)Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up (AT)into the upper room where they were staying: (AU)Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and (AV)Simon the Zealot; and (AW)Judas the son of James. 14 (AX)These all continued with one [l]accord in prayer [m]and supplication, with (AY)the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with (AZ)His brothers.

Matthias Chosen(BA)

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the [n]disciples (altogether the number (BB)of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, (BC)which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (BD)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17 for (BE)he was numbered with us and obtained a part in (BF)this ministry.”

18 (BG)(Now this man purchased a field with (BH)the [o]wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his [p]entrails gushed out. 19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:

(BI)‘Let his dwelling place be [q]desolate,
And let no one live in it’;

and,

(BJ)‘Let another take his [r]office.’

21 “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when (BK)He was taken up from us, one of these must (BL)become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

23 And they proposed two: Joseph called (BM)Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, (BN)who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 (BO)to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Coming of the Holy Spirit

When (BP)the Day of Pentecost had fully come, (BQ)they were all [s]with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and (BR)it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them [t]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And (BS)they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began (BT)to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Crowd’s Response

And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, (BU)devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the (BV)multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak (BW)Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own [u]language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and (BX)Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and [v]Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

Peter’s Sermon(BY)

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, (BZ)since it is only [w]the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 ‘And(CA) it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
(CB)That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and (CC)your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
(CD)And they shall prophesy.
19 (CE)I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
20 (CF)The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
21 And it shall come to pass
That (CG)whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.’

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you (CH)by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know— 23 Him, (CI)being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, (CJ)you [x]have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 (CK)whom God raised up, having [y]loosed the [z]pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him:

(CL)‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face,
For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad;
Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.
27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see (CM)corruption.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’

29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you (CN)of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, (CO)and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, [aa]according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, (CP)that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 (CQ)This Jesus God has raised up, (CR)of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore (CS)being exalted [ab]to (CT)the right hand of God, and (CU)having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He (CV)poured out this which you now see and hear.

34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:

(CW)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

37 Now when they heard this, (CX)they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

38 Then Peter said to them, (CY)“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [ac]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and (CZ)to your children, and (DA)to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

A Vital Church Grows

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [ad]perverse generation.” 41 Then those who [ae]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 (DB)And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [af]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and (DC)many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and (DD)had all things in common, 45 and [ag]sold their possessions and goods, and (DE)divided[ah] them among all, as anyone had need.

46 (DF)So continuing daily with one accord (DG)in the temple, and (DH)breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And (DI)the Lord added [ai]to the church daily those who were being saved.

A Lame Man Healed

Now Peter and John went up together (DJ)to the temple at the hour of prayer, (DK)the ninth hour. And (DL)a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, (DM)to [aj]ask alms from those who entered the temple; who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.” So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: (DN)In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. So he, (DO)leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God. (DP)And all the people saw him walking and praising God. 10 Then they knew that it was he who (DQ)sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Preaching in Solomon’s Portico

11 Now as the lame man who was healed held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch (DR)which is called Solomon’s, greatly amazed. 12 So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 (DS)The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, (DT)glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you (DU)delivered up and (DV)denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let Him go. 14 But you denied (DW)the Holy One (DX)and the Just, and (DY)asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and killed the [ak]Prince of life, (DZ)whom God raised from the dead, (EA)of which we are witnesses. 16 (EB)And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

17 “Yet now, brethren, I know that (EC)you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But (ED)those things which God foretold (EE)by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 (EF)Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 20 and that He may send [al]Jesus Christ, who was [am]preached to you before, 21 (EG)whom heaven must receive until the times of (EH)restoration of all things, (EI)which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since [an]the world began. 22 For Moses truly said to the fathers, (EJ)‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you. 23 And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ 24 Yes, and (EK)all the prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have spoken, have also [ao]foretold these days. 25 (EL)You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, (EM)‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ 26 To you (EN)first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, (EO)in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.”

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

21 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples,(A) by the Sea of Galilee.[a](B) It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas(C) (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael(D) from Cana in Galilee,(E) the sons of Zebedee,(F) and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.(G)

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.(H)

He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.(I)

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved(J) said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[c] When they landed, they saw a fire(K) of burning coals there with fish on it,(L) and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.(M) 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples(N) after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”(O)

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”(P)

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”(Q)

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?”(R) He said, “Lord, you know all things;(S) you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.(T) 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death(U) by which Peter would glorify God.(V) Then he said to him, “Follow me!”(W)

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved(X) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)(Y) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return,(Z) what is that to you? You must follow me.”(AA) 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers(AB) that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things(AC) and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.(AD)

25 Jesus did many other things as well.(AE) If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven

In my former book,(AF) Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach(AG) until the day he was taken up to heaven,(AH) after giving instructions(AI) through the Holy Spirit to the apostles(AJ) he had chosen.(AK) After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them(AL) over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.(AM) On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait(AN) for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.(AO) For John baptized with[d] water,(AP) but in a few days you will be baptized with[e] the Holy Spirit.”(AQ)

Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore(AR) the kingdom to Israel?”

He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.(AS) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;(AT) and you will be my witnesses(AU) in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,(AV) and to the ends of the earth.”(AW)

After he said this, he was taken up(AX) before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white(AY) stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,”(AZ) they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back(BA) in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem(BB) from the hill called the Mount of Olives,(BC) a Sabbath day’s walk[f] from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room(BD) where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.(BE) 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer,(BF) along with the women(BG) and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.(BH)

15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters,[g](BI) the Scripture had to be fulfilled(BJ) in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas,(BK) who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number(BL) and shared in our ministry.”(BM)

18 (With the payment(BN) he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field;(BO) there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language(BP) Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:

“‘May his place be deserted;
let there be no one to dwell in it,’[h](BQ)

and,

“‘May another take his place of leadership.’[i](BR)

21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism(BS) to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness(BT) with us of his resurrection.”

23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed,(BU) “Lord, you know everyone’s heart.(BV) Show us(BW) which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.(BX)

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost(BY) came, they were all together(BZ) in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.(CA) They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit(CB) and began to speak in other tongues[j](CC) as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing(CD) Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed,(CE) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?(CF) Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,(CG) Pontus(CH) and Asia,[k](CI) 10 Phrygia(CJ) and Pamphylia,(CK) Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;(CL) visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”(CM)

Peter Addresses the Crowd

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!(CN) 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.(CO)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(CP)
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
    and they will prophesy.(CQ)
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,(CR)
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood(CS)
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord(CT) will be saved.’[l](CU)

22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth(CV) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,(CW) which God did among you through him,(CX) as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;(CY) and you, with the help of wicked men,[m] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.(CZ) 24 But God raised him from the dead,(DA) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.(DB) 25 David said about him:

“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
    I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.(DC)
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[n](DD)

29 “Fellow Israelites,(DE) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch(DF) David died and was buried,(DG) and his tomb is here(DH) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.(DI) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.(DJ) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,(DK) and we are all witnesses(DL) of it. 33 Exalted(DM) to the right hand of God,(DN) he has received from the Father(DO) the promised Holy Spirit(DP) and has poured out(DQ) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[o](DR)

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord(DS) and Messiah.”(DT)

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”(DU)

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,(DV) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.(DW) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(DX) 39 The promise is for you and your children(DY) and for all who are far off(DZ)—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”(EA) 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number(EB) that day.

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching(EC) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread(ED) and to prayer.(EE) 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.(EF) 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.(EG) 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.(EH) 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.(EI) They broke bread(EJ) in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.(EK) And the Lord added to their number(EL) daily those who were being saved.

Peter Heals a Lame Beggar

One day Peter and John(EM) were going up to the temple(EN) at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon.(EO) Now a man who was lame from birth(EP) was being carried to the temple gate(EQ) called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg(ER) from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(ES) walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping,(ET) and praising God. When all the people(EU) saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful,(EV) and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Peter Speaks to the Onlookers

11 While the man held on to Peter and John,(EW) all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon’s Colonnade.(EX) 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,(EY) the God of our fathers,(EZ) has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over(FA) to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate,(FB) though he had decided to let him go.(FC) 14 You disowned the Holy(FD) and Righteous One(FE) and asked that a murderer be released to you.(FF) 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead.(FG) We are witnesses(FH) of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus,(FI) this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.

17 “Now, fellow Israelites,(FJ) I know that you acted in ignorance,(FK) as did your leaders.(FL) 18 But this is how God fulfilled(FM) what he had foretold(FN) through all the prophets,(FO) saying that his Messiah would suffer.(FP) 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out,(FQ) that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah,(FR) who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him(FS) until the time comes for God to restore everything,(FT) as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.(FU) 22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you.(FV) 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.’[p](FW)

24 “Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets(FX) who have spoken have foretold these days. 25 And you are heirs(FY) of the prophets and of the covenant(FZ) God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.’[q](GA) 26 When God raised up(GB) his servant, he sent him first(GC) to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”
