18 (A)Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, (B)you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show (C)by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, (D)“Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

20 Peter turned and saw (E)the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, (F)the one who had been reclining at table close to him and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain (G)until (H)I come, what is that to you? (I)You follow me!” 23 So the saying spread abroad among (J)the brothers[a] that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple (K)who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and (L)we know (M)that his testimony is true.

25 Now (N)there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that (O)the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

  1. John 21:23 Or brothers and sisters

18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death(A) by which Peter would glorify God.(B) Then he said to him, “Follow me!”(C)

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved(D) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)(E) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return,(F) what is that to you? You must follow me.”(G) 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers(H) that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things(I) and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.(J)

25 Jesus did many other things as well.(K) If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
