Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And (A)she saw (B)two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, (C)“Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, (D)“They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and (E)saw Jesus standing, (F)but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, (G)“Woman, why are you weeping? (H)Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be (I)the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,[a] (J)“Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to (K)my brothers and say to them, (L)‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to (M)my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene (N)went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
19 (O)On the evening (P)of that day, the first day of the week, (Q)the doors being locked where the disciples were (R)for fear of the Jews,[b] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, (S)“Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, (T)he showed them his hands and his side. Then (U)the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As (V)the Father has sent me, (W)even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he (X)breathed on them and said to them, (Y)“Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (Z)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
Jesus and Thomas
24 Now (AA)Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,[c] was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, (AB)“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. (AC)Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, (AD)“Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, (AE)“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, (AF)“My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? (AG)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
The Purpose of This Book
30 (AH)Now Jesus did many other signs (AI)in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (AJ)but these are written so that you may (AK)believe that Jesus is the Christ, (AL)the Son of God, and that by believing (AM)you may have life (AN)in his name.
Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples
21 After this Jesus (AO)revealed himself (AP)again to the disciples by (AQ)the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, (AR)Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of (AS)Cana in Galilee, (AT)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but (AU)that night they caught nothing.
4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (AV)did not know that it was Jesus. 5 (AW)Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 (AX)He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple (AY)whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, (AZ)he put on his outer garment, for he was (BA)stripped for work, and (BB)threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards[d] off.
9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, (BC)“Come and (BD)have breakfast.” Now (BE)none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and (BF)took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 (BG)This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Jesus and Peter
15 When they had (BH)finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, (BI)“Simon, (BJ)son of John, (BK)do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed (BL)my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, (BM)“Tend (BN)my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him (BO)the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, (BP)you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed (BQ)my sheep. 18 (BR)Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, (BS)you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show (BT)by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, (BU)“Follow me.”
Jesus and the Beloved Apostle
20 Peter turned and saw (BV)the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, (BW)the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain (BX)until (BY)I come, what is that to you? (BZ)You follow me!” 23 So the saying spread abroad among (CA)the brothers[e] that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple (CB)who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and (CC)we know (CD)that his testimony is true.
25 Now (CE)there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that (CF)the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
1 In the first book, O (CG)Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began (CH)to do and teach, 2 until the day when (CI)he was taken up, after he (CJ)had given commands (CK)through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 (CL)He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 And while staying[f] with them (CM)he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for (CN)John baptized with water, (CO)but you will be baptized (CP)with[g] the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
The Ascension
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, (CQ)will you at this time (CR)restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, (CS)“It is not for you to know (CT)times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive (CU)power (CV)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and (CW)you will be (CX)my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and (CY)Samaria, and (CZ)to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, (DA)he was lifted up, and (DB)a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, (DC)two (DD)men stood by them in (DE)white robes, 11 and said, (DF)“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, (DG)will (DH)come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb(A) 12 and saw two angels in white,(B) seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”(C)
“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”(D) 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,(E) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.(F)
15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?(G) Who is it you are looking for?”
Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,(H) “Rabboni!”(I) (which means “Teacher”).
17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers(J) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father(K) and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene(L) went to the disciples(M) with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,(N) Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(O) be with you!”(P) 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.(Q) The disciples were overjoyed(R) when they saw the Lord.
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!(S) As the Father has sent me,(T) I am sending you.”(U) 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.(V) 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”(W)
Jesus Appears to Thomas
24 Now Thomas(X) (also known as Didymus[a]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side,(Y) I will not believe.”(Z)
26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace(AA) be with you!”(AB) 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”(AC)
28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed;(AD) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”(AE)
The Purpose of John’s Gospel
30 Jesus performed many other signs(AF) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.(AG) 31 But these are written that you may believe[b](AH) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,(AI) and that by believing you may have life in his name.(AJ)
Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish
21 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples,(AK) by the Sea of Galilee.[c](AL) It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas(AM) (also known as Didymus[d]), Nathanael(AN) from Cana in Galilee,(AO) the sons of Zebedee,(AP) and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.(AQ)
4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.(AR)
5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
“No,” they answered.
6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.(AS)
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved(AT) said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[e] 9 When they landed, they saw a fire(AU) of burning coals there with fish on it,(AV) and some bread.
10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.(AW) 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples(AX) after he was raised from the dead.
Jesus Reinstates Peter
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”(AY)
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”(AZ)
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”(BA)
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?”(BB) He said, “Lord, you know all things;(BC) you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.(BD) 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death(BE) by which Peter would glorify God.(BF) Then he said to him, “Follow me!”(BG)
20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved(BH) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)(BI) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return,(BJ) what is that to you? You must follow me.”(BK) 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers(BL) that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things(BM) and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.(BN)
25 Jesus did many other things as well.(BO) If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven
1 In my former book,(BP) Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach(BQ) 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven,(BR) after giving instructions(BS) through the Holy Spirit to the apostles(BT) he had chosen.(BU) 3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them(BV) over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.(BW) 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait(BX) for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.(BY) 5 For John baptized with[f] water,(BZ) but in a few days you will be baptized with[g] the Holy Spirit.”(CA)
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore(CB) the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.(CC) 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;(CD) and you will be my witnesses(CE) in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,(CF) and to the ends of the earth.”(CG)
9 After he said this, he was taken up(CH) before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white(CI) stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,”(CJ) they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back(CK) in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
