18 But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.”

19 “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

20 “What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?” 21 But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.

Jesus and Nicodemus

23 Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him. 24 But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. 25 No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart.

There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again,[a] you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

“What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.[b] Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.[c]

18 The Jews(A) then responded to him, “What sign(B) can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”(C)

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”(D)

20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.(E) 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.(F) Then they believed the scripture(G) and the words that Jesus had spoken.

23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(H) many people saw the signs(I) he was performing and believed(J) in his name.[a] 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind,(K) for he knew what was in each person.(L)

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus(M) who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.(N) He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,(O) we know(P) that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs(Q) you are doing if God were not with him.”(R)

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[b](S)

“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.(T) Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[c] gives birth to spirit.(U)
