⁴⁰ Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.^(A) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.^(B)

⁴⁴ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,^(A) and a cloth around his face.^(B)

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

⁶ Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,^(A) and carried him out and buried him.

⁵ He bent over and looked in^(A) at the strips of linen^(B) lying there but did not go in. ⁶ Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, ⁷ as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.^(C) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.

¹² Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves,^(A) and he went away,^(B) wondering to himself what had happened.
