²⁴so they said to one another, “We shouldn’t tear it in pieces; let’s draw for it.” This happened in order to fulfill the words from the Tanakh,

“They divided my clothes among themselves
and gambled for my robe.”^[a]

This is why the soldiers did these things.

²⁴“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled^(A) that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.”^[a]^(B)

So this is what the soldiers did.
