12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(A) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(B) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(C)

Peter’s First Denial(D)

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(E) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(F) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”(G)

18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(H) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(I)

The High Priest Questions Jesus(J)

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(K) or at the temple,(L) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(M) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(N) nearby slapped him in the face.(O) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(P) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(Q) the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials(R)

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(S) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(T)

26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(U) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(V) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(W)

12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.

18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.

26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

Before the High Priest

12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (A)they led Him away to (B)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (C)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (D)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [a]expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus(E)

15 (F)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (G)another[b] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (H)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”

He said, “I am (I)not.”

18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

Jesus Questioned by the High Priest

19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

20 Jesus answered him, (J)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (K)in synagogues and (L)in the temple, where [c]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (M)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”

22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (N)struck[d] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”

23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”

24 (O)Then Annas sent Him bound to (P)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter Denies Twice More

25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (Q)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”

He denied it and said, “I am not!”

26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (R)immediately a rooster crowed.
