Jesus before the Priests

12 (A)So (B)the Roman [a]cohort, the [b]commander, and the (C)officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him, 13 and brought Him to (D)Annas first; for he was the father-in-law of (E)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that (F)it was in their best interest for one man to die in behalf of the people.

15 (G)Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into (H)the courtyard of the high priest, 16 (I)but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. 17 (J)Then the slave woman who was the doorkeeper *said to Peter, “(K)You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?” He *said, “I am not.” 18 Now the slaves and the (L)officers were standing there, having made (M)a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were (N)warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.

19 (O)The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I (P)have spoken openly to the world; I always (Q)taught in [c]synagogues and (R)in the temple area, where all the Jews congregate; and I said nothing in secret. 21 Why are you asking Me? Ask those who have heard what I spoke to them. Look: these people know what I said.” 22 But when He said this, one of the (S)officers, who was standing nearby, (T)struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” 23 (U)Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” 24 (V)So Annas sent Him bound to (W)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

25 (X)Now (Y)Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “(Z)You are not one of His disciples as well, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one (AA)whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in (AB)the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately (AC)a rooster crowed.

Jesus before Pilate

28 (AD)Then they *brought Jesus from (AE)Caiaphas into (AF)the [d]Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter (AG)the [e]Praetorium, so that (AH)they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 (AI)Therefore Pilate came out to them and *said, “What accusation are you bringing against this Man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not [f]a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.” 31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not [g]permitted to put anyone to death.” 32 This happened so that (AJ)the word of Jesus which He said, indicating what kind of death He was going to die, would be fulfilled.

33 Therefore Pilate (AK)entered the Praetorium again, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “(AL)You are the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this [h]on your own, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me; what have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, (AM)My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not [i]of this realm.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, (AN)You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: (AO)to testify to the truth. (AP)Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” 38 Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And after saying this, he (AQ)came out again to the Jews and *said to them, “(AR)I find no grounds at all for charges in [j]His case. 39 (AS)However, you have a custom that I release one prisoner [k]for you at the Passover; therefore do you wish that I release [l]for you the King of the Jews?” 40 So they shouted again, saying, “(AT)Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a rebel.

The Crown of Thorns

19 So Pilate then took Jesus and [m](AU)had Him flogged. (AV)And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head, and put a purple [n]cloak on Him; and they repeatedly came up to Him and said, “(AW)Hail, King of the Jews!” and (AX)slapped Him in the face again and again. And then Pilate (AY)came out again and *said to them, “See, I am bringing Him out to you so that you will know that (AZ)I find no grounds at all for charges in [o]His case.” Jesus then came out, (BA)wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!” So when the chief priests and the (BB)officers saw Him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for (BC)I find no grounds for charges in [p]His case!” The Jews answered him, “(BD)We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He (BE)made Himself out to be the Son of God!”

Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; and he (BF)entered the [q]Praetorium again and *said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But (BG)Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate *said to Him, “Are you not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” 11 Jesus answered him, (BH)You would have no authority [r]over Me at all, if it had not been given to you from above; for this reason (BI)the one who handed Me over to you has the greater sin.” 12 As a result of this, Pilate [s]made efforts to release Him; but the Jews shouted, saying, “(BJ)If you release this Man, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king [t]opposes Caesar!”

13 Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and (BK)sat down on the judgment seat at a place called [u]The Pavement—but (BL)in [v]Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now it was (BM)the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the [w](BN)sixth hour. And he *said to the Jews, “Look, (BO)your King!” 15 So they shouted, “(BP)Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate *said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.”

The Crucifixion

16 So he then (BQ)handed Him over to them to be crucified.

12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(A) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(B) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(C)

Peter’s First Denial(D)

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(E) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(F) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”(G)

18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(H) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(I)

The High Priest Questions Jesus(J)

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(K) or at the temple,(L) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(M) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(N) nearby slapped him in the face.(O) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(P) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(Q) the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials(R)

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(S) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(T)

26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(U) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(V) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(W)

Jesus Before Pilate(X)

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(Y) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(Z) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AA) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AB)

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AC) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AD)

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AE) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AF) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AG)

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AH) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AI)

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AJ) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AK)

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(AL)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(AM) The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(AN) And they slapped him in the face.(AO)

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(AP) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(AQ) When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(AR) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(AS) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(AT)

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(AU) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(AV)

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace.(AW) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(AX) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(AY) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(AZ) is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(BA) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(BB) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(BC) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(BD) of the Passover; it was about noon.(BE)

“Here is your king,”(BF) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(BG)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(BH)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
