And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children—

“My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord
or lose heart when you are punished by him,(A)
for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves
and chastises every child whom he accepts.”(B)

Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children, for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline?(C) If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children.(D) Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness.(E)

And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart(A) when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(B)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a](C)

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(D) For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline(E)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits(F) and live!(G) 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.(H)
