Sadness Will Turn to Joy

16 ⌞Jesus continued,⌟ “I have said these things to you so that you won’t lose your faith. ²You will be thrown out of synagogues. Certainly, the time is coming when people who murder you will think that they are serving God. ³They will do these things to you because they haven’t known the Father or me. ⁴But I’ve told you this so that when it happens you’ll remember what I’ve told you. I didn’t tell you this at first, because I was with you.

⁵“Now I’m going to the one who sent me. Yet, none of you asks me where I’m going. ⁶But because I’ve told you this, you’re filled with sadness. ⁷However, I am telling you the truth: It’s good for you that I’m going away. If I don’t go away, the helper won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. ⁸He will come to convict the world of sin, to show the world what has God’s approval, and to convince the world that God judges it. ⁹He will convict the world of sin, because people don’t believe in me. ¹⁰He will show the world what has God’s approval, because I’m going to the Father and you won’t see me anymore. ¹¹He will convince the world that God judges it, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

¹²“I have a lot more to tell you, but that would be too much for you now. ¹³When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into the full truth. He won’t speak on his own. He will speak what he hears and will tell you about things to come. ¹⁴He will give me glory, because he will tell you what I say. ¹⁵Everything the Father says is also what I say. That is why I said, ‘He will take what I say and tell it to you.’

¹⁶“In a little while you won’t see me anymore. Then in a little while you will see me again.”

¹⁷Some of his disciples said to each other, “What does he mean? He tells us that in a little while we won’t see him. Then he tells us that in a little while we will see him again and that he’s going to the Father.” ¹⁸So they were asking each other, “What does he mean when he says, ‘In a little while’? We don’t understand what he’s talking about.”

¹⁹Jesus knew they wanted to ask him something. So he said to them, “Are you trying to figure out among yourselves what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you won’t see me, and in a little while you will see me again’? ²⁰I can guarantee this truth: You will cry because you are sad, but the world will be happy. You will feel pain, but your pain will turn to happiness. ²¹A woman has pain when her time to give birth comes. But after the child is born, she doesn’t remember the pain anymore because she’s happy that a child has been brought into the world.

²²“Now you’re in a painful situation. But I will see you again. Then you will be happy, and no one will take that happiness away from you. ²³When that day comes, you won’t ask me any more questions. I can guarantee this truth: If you ask the Father for anything in my name, he will give it to you. ²⁴So far you haven’t asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive so that you can be completely happy.

²⁵“I have used examples to illustrate these things. The time is coming when I won’t use examples to speak to you. Rather, I will speak to you about the Father in plain words. ²⁶When that day comes, you will ask for what you want in my name. I’m telling you that I won’t have to ask the Father for you. ²⁷The Father loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. ²⁸I left the Father and came into the world. Again, ⌞as I’ve said,⌟ I’m going to leave the world and go back to the Father.”

²⁹His disciples said, “Now you’re talking in plain words and not using examples. ³⁰Now we know that you know everything. You don’t need to wait for questions to be asked. Because of this, we believe that you have come from God.”

³¹Jesus replied to them, “Now you believe. ³²The time is coming, and is already here, when all of you will be scattered. Each of you will go your own way and leave me all alone. Yet, I’m not all alone, because the Father is with me. ³³I’ve told you this so that my peace will be with you. In the world you’ll have trouble. But cheer up! I have overcome the world.”

16 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. ²^(A)They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, ^(B)the hour is coming when ^(C)whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. ³And they will do these things ^(D)because they have not known the Father, nor me. ⁴But ^(E)I have said these things to you, that when ^(F)their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, ^(G)because I was with you. ⁵But now ^(H)I am going to him who sent me, and ^(I)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ ⁶But because I have said these things to you, ^(J)sorrow has filled your heart. ⁷Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for ^(K)if I do not go away, ^(L)the Helper will not come to you. But ^(M)if ^(N)I go, ^(O)I will send him to you. ⁸^(P)And when he comes, he will ^(Q)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹concerning sin, ^(R)because they do not believe in me; ¹⁰^(S)concerning righteousness, ^(T)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; ¹¹^(U)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world ^(V)is judged.

¹²“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. ¹³When ^(W)the Spirit of truth comes, ^(X)he will ^(Y)guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but ^(Z)whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. ¹⁴He will ^(AA)glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. ¹⁵^(AB)All that the Father has is mine; ^(AC)therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

¹⁶^(AD)“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and ^(AE)again a little while, and you will see me.” ¹⁷So ^(AF)some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ^(AG)‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ^(AH)‘because I am going to the Father’?” ¹⁸So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? ^(AI)We do not know what he is talking about.” ¹⁹^(AJ)Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? ²⁰Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(AK)you will weep and lament, but ^(AL)the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but ^(AM)your sorrow will turn into joy. ²¹^(AN)When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. ²²^(AO)So also you have sorrow now, but ^(AP)I will see you again, and ^(AQ)your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. ²³^(AR)In that day you will ^(AS)ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(AT)whatever you ask of the Father in my name, ^(AU)he will give it to you. ²⁴Until now you have asked nothing in my name. ^(AV)Ask, and you will receive, ^(AW)that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

²⁵“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. ^(AX)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. ²⁶In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; ²⁷^(AY)for the Father himself loves you, because ^(AZ)you have loved me and ^(BA)have believed that I came from God.^[a] ²⁸^(BB)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now ^(BC)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

²⁹His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not ^(BD)using figurative speech! ³⁰Now we know that ^(BE)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that ^(BF)you came from God.” ³¹Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? ³²Behold, ^(BG)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when ^(BH)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and ^(BI)will leave me alone. ^(BJ)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. ³³I have said these things to you, that ^(BK)in me you may have peace. ^(BL)In the world you will have ^(BM)tribulation. But ^(BN)take heart; ^(BO)I have overcome the world.”

⁸And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

⁹Of sin, because they believe not on me;

¹⁰Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

¹¹Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

¹²I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

¹³Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

¹⁴He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

¹⁵All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

¹⁶A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

¹⁷Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

¹⁸They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

¹⁹Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

²⁰Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

²¹A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

²²And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

²³And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

²⁴Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

²⁵These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

²⁶At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

²⁷For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

²⁸I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

²⁹His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

³⁰Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

³¹Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

³²Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

³³These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

16 Estas cosas os he hablado, para que no tengáis tropiezo. ²Os expulsarán de las sinagogas; y aun viene la hora cuando cualquiera que os mate, pensará que rinde servicio a Dios. ³Y harán esto porque no conocen al Padre ni a mí. ⁴Mas os he dicho estas cosas, para que cuando llegue la hora, os acordéis de que ya os lo había dicho.

La obra del Espíritu Santo

Esto no os lo dije al principio, porque yo estaba con vosotros. ⁵Pero ahora voy al que me envió; y ninguno de vosotros me pregunta: ¿A dónde vas? ⁶Antes, porque os he dicho estas cosas, tristeza ha llenado vuestro corazón. ⁷Pero yo os digo la verdad: Os conviene que yo me vaya; porque si no me fuera, el Consolador no vendría a vosotros; mas si me fuere, os lo enviaré. ⁸Y cuando él venga, convencerá al mundo de pecado, de justicia y de juicio. ⁹De pecado, por cuanto no creen en mí; ¹⁰de justicia, por cuanto voy al Padre, y no me veréis más; ¹¹y de juicio, por cuanto el príncipe de este mundo ha sido ya juzgado.

¹²Aún tengo muchas cosas que deciros, pero ahora no las podéis sobrellevar. ¹³Pero cuando venga el Espíritu de verdad, él os guiará a toda la verdad; porque no hablará por su propia cuenta, sino que hablará todo lo que oyere, y os hará saber las cosas que habrán de venir. ¹⁴Él me glorificará; porque tomará de lo mío, y os lo hará saber. ¹⁵Todo lo que tiene el Padre es mío; por eso dije que tomará de lo mío, y os lo hará saber.

²⁵Estas cosas os he hablado en alegorías; la hora viene cuando ya no os hablaré por alegorías, sino que claramente os anunciaré acerca del Padre. ²⁶En aquel día pediréis en mi nombre; y no os digo que yo rogaré al Padre por vosotros, ²⁷pues el Padre mismo os ama, porque vosotros me habéis amado, y habéis creído que yo salí de Dios. ²⁸Salí del Padre, y he venido al mundo; otra vez dejo el mundo, y voy al Padre.

³Так будут поступать, потому что не познали ни Отца, ни Меня.

⁴Но Я сказал вам сие для того, чтобы вы, когда придет то время вспомнили, что Я сказывал вам о том; не говорил же сего вам сначала, потому что был с вами.

⁵А теперь иду к Пославшему Меня, и никто из вас не спрашивает Меня: куда идешь?

²²Так и вы теперь имеете печаль; но Я увижу вас опять, и возрадуется сердце ваше, и радости вашей никто не отнимет у вас;

²³и в тот день вы не спросите Меня ни о чем. Истинно, истинно говорю вам: о чем ни попросите Отца во имя Мое, даст вам.

²⁴Доныне вы ничего не просили во имя Мое; просите, и получите, чтобы радость ваша была совершенна.
