John 16:5-15 Disciples’ Literal New Testament (DLNT)

But now I am going to the One having sent Me. And none of you is asking Me, ‘Where are You going?’, but grief has filled your heart because I have spoken these things to you. But I tell you the truth— it is better[a] for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you. And having come, that One will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment— concerning sin, because[b] they are not believing in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because[c] I am going to the Father and you are no longer going to see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

When The Helper Comes, He Will Guide You Into All Truth

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them now. 13 But when that One, the Spirit of truth, comes— He will guide you in all the truth. For He will not speak from Himself, but He will speak whatever He will hear. And He will declare to you the things coming. 14 That One will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All[d] that the Father has is Mine. For this reason I said that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you.

  1. John 16:7 Or, profitable, advantageous.
  2. John 16:9 Or, that, in-that. Likewise in v 10 and 11.
  3. John 16:10 One who understands why Jesus returned to the Father will also understand what true righteousness is and how it can be obtained.
  4. John 16:15 Only One making Himself equal to God (5:18) could make such a statement. No finite being could say this. See 17:10.

John 16:5-15 New International Reader's Version (NIRV)

But now I am going to the one who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Instead, you are filled with sadness because I have said these things. But what I’m about to tell you is true. It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Friend will not come to help you. But if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove that the world’s people are guilty. He will prove their guilt concerning sin and godliness and judgment. The world is guilty as far as sin is concerned. That’s because people do not believe in me. 10 The world is guilty as far as godliness is concerned. That’s because I am going to the Father, where you can’t see me anymore. 11 The world is guilty as far as judgment is concerned. That’s because the devil, the prince of this world, has already been judged.

12 “I have much more to say to you. It is more than you can handle right now. 13 But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own. He will speak only what he hears. And he will tell you what is still going to happen. 14 He will bring me glory. That’s because what he receives from me he will show to you. 15 Everything that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said what the Holy Spirit receives from me he will show to you.
