27 (A)for the Father himself loves you, because (B)you have loved me and (C)have believed that I came from God.[a] 28 (D)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now (E)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not (F)using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that (G)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that (H)you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (I)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when (J)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and (K)will leave me alone. (L)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that (M)in me you may have peace. (N)In the world you will have (O)tribulation. But (P)take heart; (Q)I have overcome the world.”

27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(A) and have believed that I came from God.(B) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(C)

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(D) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(E) that you came from God.”(F)

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(G) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(H) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(I) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(J)

Test the Spirits

Beloved, (A)do not believe every spirit, but (B)test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for (C)many (D)false prophets (E)have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: (F)every spirit that confesses that (G)Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit (H)that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and (I)now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for (J)he who is in you is greater than (K)he who is in the world. (L)They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and (M)the world listens to them. We are from God. (N)Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know (O)the Spirit of truth and (P)the spirit of error.

On Denying the Incarnation

Dear friends,(A) do not believe every spirit,(B) but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.(C) This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh(D) is from God,(E) but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist,(F) which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.(G)

You, dear children,(H) are from God and have overcome them,(I) because the one who is in you(J) is greater than the one who is in the world.(K) They are from the world(L) and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us.(M) This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth(N) and the spirit of falsehood.(O)
