23 (A)In that day you will (B)ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, (C)whatever you ask of the Father in my name, (D)he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. (E)Ask, and you will receive, (F)that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. (G)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 (H)for the Father himself loves you, because (I)you have loved me and (J)have believed that I came from God.[a] 28 (K)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now (L)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not (M)using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that (N)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that (O)you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (P)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when (Q)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and (R)will leave me alone. (S)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that (T)in me you may have peace. (U)In the world you will have (V)tribulation. But (W)take heart; (X)I have overcome the world.”

  1. John 16:27 Some manuscripts from the Father

23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
