Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.(A) I am the vine; (B) you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit,(C) because you can do nothing without me. If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside(D) like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire,(E) and they are burned.(F) If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.(G) My Father is glorified(H) by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be[a] my disciples.

Christlike Love

“As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love.(I) 10 If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.(J)

11 “I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.(K)

12 “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved(L) you. 13 No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life(M) for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master[b](N) is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you.(O) I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask(P) the Father in my name,(Q) he will give you.(R)

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(B) apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(C) If you remain in me(D) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(E) This is to my Father’s glory,(F) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(G)

“As the Father has loved me,(H) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(I) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(J) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(K) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(L) 14 You are my friends(M) if you do what I command.(N) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(O) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(P) so that you might go and bear fruit(Q)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(R)
