Jesus Tells of the One Who Will Hand Him Over to the Leaders (A)

21 When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in heart. He told them in very plain words, saying, “For sure, I tell you, one of you is going to hand Me over to the leaders of the country.”

22 The followers began to look at each other. They did not know which one He was speaking of. 23 One follower, whom Jesus loved, was beside Jesus. 24 Simon Peter got this follower to look his way. He wanted him to ask Jesus which one He was speaking of. 25 While close beside Jesus, he asked, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is the one I give this piece of bread to after I have put it in the dish.” Then He put the bread in the dish and gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 After Judas had eaten the piece of bread, Satan went into him. Jesus said to Judas, “What you are going to do, do in a hurry.”

28 No one at the supper knew why Jesus had said this to Judas. 29 They thought it was because Judas carried the bag of money, and Jesus had said that Judas should buy what they needed for the religious gathering. Or they thought Judas should give something to poor people. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread, he went out. It was night.

Love—the Greatest Law

31 After Judas went out, Jesus said, “The Son of Man is now honored and God has been honored in Him. 32 If God is honored in Him, God will also honor Him in Himself right now. 33 Little children, I will be with you only a little while. You will look for Me. I say to you what I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come!’ 34 I give you a new Law. You are to love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you. 35 If you love each other, all men will know you are My followers.”

Jesus Tells How Peter Will Lie about Him (B)

36 Simon Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “You cannot follow Me now where I am going. Later you will follow Me.” 37 Peter said to Jesus, “Why can I not follow You now? I will die for You.” 38 Jesus answered Peter, “Will you die for Me? For sure, I tell you, before a rooster crows, you will have said three times that you do not know Me.”

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(A) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”(B)

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(C) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(D)

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(E) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(F)

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(G) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(H) or to give something to the poor.(I) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(J)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(K)

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(L) is glorified(M) and God is glorified in him.(N) 32 If God is glorified in him,[a] God will glorify the Son in himself,(O) and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(P)

34 “A new command(Q) I give you: Love one another.(R) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(S) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(T)

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”(U)

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(V) but you will follow later.”(W)

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(X)
