John 12:37-50
Holman Christian Standard Bible
Isaiah’s Prophecies Fulfilled
37 Even though He had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in Him. 38 But this was to fulfill(A) the word of Isaiah(B) the prophet, who said:[a]
39 This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said:
40 He has blinded(E) their eyes
and hardened their hearts,(F)
so that they would not see with their eyes
or understand with their hearts,
and be converted,(G)
and I would heal them.(H)[c]
41 Isaiah said these things because[d] he saw His glory(I) and spoke about Him.
42 Nevertheless, many did believe in Him even among the rulers,(J) but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, so they would not be banned from the synagogue. 43 For they loved praise from men(K) more than praise from God.[e](L)
A Summary of Jesus’ Mission
44 Then Jesus cried out, “The one who believes in Me(M) believes not in Me, but in Him who sent Me. 45 And the one who sees Me sees Him(N) who sent Me. 46 I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me would not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears My words and doesn’t keep(O) them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world(P) but to save the world.(Q) 48 The one who rejects Me(R) and doesn’t accept My sayings has this as his judge:[f] The word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.(S) 49 For I have not spoken on My own, but the Father(T) Himself who sent Me has given Me a command as to what I should say and what I should speak. 50 I know that His command is eternal life.(U) So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me.”(V)

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews
37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(A) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:
39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 “He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”[b](C)
41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(D) and spoke about him.(E)
42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(F) But because of the Pharisees(G) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(H) 43 for they loved human praise(I) more than praise from God.(J)
44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(K) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(L) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(M) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(N) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(O) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(P) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(Q) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(R)
