19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves: Do you see that we prevail nothing? behold, the whole world is gone after him.

20 Now there were certain Gentiles among them, who came up to adore on the festival day.

21 These therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying: Sir, we would see Jesus.

22 Philip cometh, and telleth Andrew. Again Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

23 But Jesus answered them, saying: The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

24 Amen, amen I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die,

25 Itself remaineth alone. But if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, keepeth it unto life eternal.

26 If any man minister to me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall my minister be. If any man minister to me, him will my Father honour.

27 Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause I came unto this hour.

28 Father, glorify thy name. A voice therefore came from heaven: I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

29 The multitude therefore that stood and heard, said that it thundered. Others said: An angel spoke to him.

30 Jesus answered, and said: This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31 Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.

33 (Now this he said, signifying what death he should die.)

34 The multitude answered him: We have heard out of the law, that Christ abideth for ever; and how sayest thou: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?

35 Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, that the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness, knoweth not whither he goeth.

36 Whilst you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things Jesus spoke; and he went away, and hid himself from them.

19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”(A)

Jesus Predicts His Death

20 Now there were some Greeks(B) among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida(C) in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

23 Jesus replied, “The hour(D) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.(E) 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,(F) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it(G) for eternal life.(H) 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.(I) My Father will honor the one who serves me.

27 “Now my soul is troubled,(J) and what shall I say? ‘Father,(K) save me from this hour’?(L) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven,(M) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,(N) not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world;(O) now the prince of this world(P) will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up[a] from the earth,(Q) will draw all people to myself.”(R) 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.(S)

34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(T) that the Messiah will remain forever,(U) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(V) must be lifted up’?(W) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(X) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(Y) before darkness overtakes you.(Z) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(AA) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(AB)
