John 11:55-12:19

55 Now (A)the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country prior to the Passover, (B)in order to [a]purify themselves. 56 So they (C)were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple area, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now (D)the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might arrest Him.
Mary Anoints Jesus
12 (E)Therefore, six days before (F)the Passover, Jesus came to (G)Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they made Him a dinner there, and (H)Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. 3 (I)Mary then took a [b]pound of very expensive (J)perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But (K)Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, the one who intended to [c]betray Him, *said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred [d]denarii and the proceeds given to poor people?” 6 Now he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he (L)kept the money box, he used to [e]steal from (M)what was put into it. 7 Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it [f]for (N)the day of My burial. 8 (O)For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”
9 The (P)large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not on account of Jesus only, but so that they might also see Lazarus, (Q)whom He raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also, 11 because (R)on account of him (S)many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.
The Triumphal Entry
12 On the next day, when (T)the large crowd that had come to (U)the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began shouting, “(V)Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, indeed, the (W)King of Israel!” 14 Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 15 “(X)Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” 16 (Y)These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus (Z)was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things for Him. 17 So (AA)the [g]people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. 18 (AB)For this reason also the [h]people went to meet Him, (AC)because they heard that He had performed this [i]sign. 19 So the Pharisees said [j]to one another, “You see that you are not accomplishing anything; look, the world has gone after Him!”

55 It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began. 56 They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, “What do you think? He won’t come for Passover, will he?” 57 Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
12 Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead. 2 A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate[a] with him. 3 Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar[b] of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.
4 But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, 5 “That perfume was worth a year’s wages.[c] It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” 6 Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.
7 Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
9 When all the people[d] heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead. 10 Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too, 11 for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted them[e] and believed in Jesus.
Jesus’ Triumphant Entry
12 The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors 13 took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted,
“Praise God![f]
Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hail to the King of Israel!”[g]
14 Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said:
15 “Don’t be afraid, people of Jerusalem.[h]
Look, your King is coming,
riding on a donkey’s colt.”[i]
16 His disciples didn’t understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him.
17 Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others[j] about it. 18 That was the reason so many went out to meet him—because they had heard about this miraculous sign. 19 Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone[k] has gone after him!”
