The Death of Lazarus
11 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent a message to Jesus,[a] “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5 Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6 after having heard that Lazarus[b] was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. 10 But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them.” 11 After saying this, he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.” 13 Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 Thomas, who was called the Twin,[c] said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Jesus the Resurrection and the Life
17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus[d] had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles[e] away, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.[f] Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah,[g] the Son of God, the one coming into the world.”
Jesus Weeps
28 When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34 He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus began to weep. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”
Jesus Raises Lazarus to Life
38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what he had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council, and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place[h] and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not understand that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed.” 51 He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the dispersed children of God. 53 So from that day on they planned to put him to death.
54 Jesus therefore no longer walked about openly among the Jews, but went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness; and he remained there with the disciples.
55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and were asking one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? Surely he will not come to the festival, will he?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesus[i] was should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Die Auferweckung des Lazarus
11 Es war aber einer krank, Lazarus von Bethanien aus dem Dorf der Maria und ihrer Schwester Martha,
2 nämlich der Maria, die den Herrn gesalbt und seine Füße mit ihren Haaren getrocknet hat; deren Bruder Lazarus war krank.
3 Da sandten die Schwestern zu ihm und ließen ihm sagen: Herr, siehe, der, den du lieb hast, ist krank!
4 Als Jesus es hörte, sprach er: Diese Krankheit ist nicht zum Tode, sondern zur Verherrlichung Gottes, damit der Sohn Gottes dadurch verherrlicht wird!
5 Jesus aber liebte Martha und ihre Schwester und Lazarus.
6 Als er nun hörte, dass jener krank sei, blieb er noch zwei Tage an dem Ort, wo er war.
7 Dann erst sagte er zu den Jüngern: Lasst uns wieder nach Judäa ziehen!
8 Die Jünger antworteten ihm: Rabbi, eben noch wollten dich die Juden steinigen, und du begibst dich wieder dorthin?
9 Jesus erwiderte: Hat der Tag nicht zwölf Stunden? Wenn jemand bei Tag wandelt, so stößt er nicht an, denn er sieht das Licht dieser Welt.
10 Wenn aber jemand bei Nacht wandelt, so stößt er an, weil das Licht nicht in ihm ist.
11 Dies sprach er, und danach sagte er zu ihnen: Unser Freund Lazarus ist eingeschlafen[a]; aber ich gehe hin, um ihn aufzuwecken.
12 Da sprachen seine Jünger: Herr, wenn er eingeschlafen ist, so wird er gesund werden!
13 Jesus aber hatte von seinem Tod geredet; sie dagegen meinten, er rede vom natürlichen Schlaf.
14 Daraufhin nun sagte es ihnen Jesus frei heraus: Lazarus ist gestorben;
15 und ich bin froh um euretwillen, dass ich nicht dort gewesen bin, damit ihr glaubt. Doch lasst uns zu ihm gehen!
16 Da sprach Thomas, der Zwilling genannt wird, zu den Mitjüngern: Lasst uns auch hingehen, damit wir mit ihm sterben!
17 Als nun Jesus hinkam, fand er ihn schon vier Tage im Grab liegend.
18 Bethanien aber war nahe bei Jerusalem, ungefähr 15 Stadien[b] weit entfernt;
19 und viele von den Juden waren zu denen um Martha und Maria hinzugekommen, um sie wegen ihres Bruders zu trösten.
20 Als Martha nun hörte, dass Jesus komme, lief sie ihm entgegen; Maria aber blieb im Haus sitzen.
21 Da sprach Martha zu Jesus: Herr, wenn du hier gewesen wärst, mein Bruder wäre nicht gestorben!
22 Doch auch jetzt weiß ich: Was immer du von Gott erbitten wirst, das wird Gott dir geben.
23 Jesus spricht zu ihr: Dein Bruder wird auferstehen!
24 Martha spricht zu ihm: Ich weiß, dass er auferstehen wird in der Auferstehung am letzten Tag.
25 Jesus spricht zu ihr: Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben. Wer an mich glaubt, wird leben, auch wenn er stirbt;
26 und jeder, der lebt und an mich glaubt, wird in Ewigkeit nicht sterben. Glaubst du das?
27 Sie spricht zu ihm: Ja, Herr! Ich glaube, dass du der Christus bist, der Sohn Gottes, der in die Welt kommen soll.
28 Und als sie das gesagt hatte, ging sie fort und rief heimlich ihre Schwester Maria und sprach: Der Meister ist da und ruft dich!
29 Als diese es hörte, stand sie schnell auf und begab sich zu ihm.
30 Jesus war aber noch nicht in das Dorf gekommen, sondern befand sich an dem Ort, wo Martha ihm begegnet war.
31 Als nun die Juden, die bei ihr im Haus waren und sie trösteten, sahen, dass Maria so schnell aufstand und hinausging, folgten sie ihr nach und sprachen: Sie geht zum Grab, um dort zu weinen.
32 Als aber Maria dorthin kam, wo Jesus war, und ihn sah, fiel sie zu seinen Füßen nieder und sprach zu ihm: Herr, wenn du hier gewesen wärst, mein Bruder wäre nicht gestorben!
33 Als nun Jesus sah, wie sie weinte, und wie die Juden, die mit ihr gekommen waren, weinten, seufzte er im Geist und wurde bewegt
34 und sprach: Wo habt ihr ihn hingelegt? Sie sprechen zu ihm: Herr, komm und sieh!
35 Jesus weinte.
36 Da sagten die Juden: Seht, wie hatte er ihn so lieb!
37 Etliche von ihnen aber sprachen: Konnte der, welcher dem Blinden die Augen geöffnet hat, nicht dafür sorgen, dass auch dieser nicht gestorben wäre?
38 Jesus nun, indem er wieder bei sich selbst seufzte, kam zum Grab. Es war aber eine Höhle, und ein Stein lag darauf.
39 Jesus spricht: Hebt den Stein weg! Martha, die Schwester des Verstorbenen, spricht zu ihm: Herr, er riecht schon, denn er ist schon vier Tage hier!
40 Jesus spricht zu ihr: Habe ich dir nicht gesagt: Wenn du glaubst, wirst du die Herrlichkeit Gottes sehen?
41 Da hoben sie den Stein weg, wo der Verstorbene lag. Jesus aber hob die Augen empor und sprach: Vater, ich danke dir, dass du mich erhört hast.
42 Ich aber weiß, dass du mich allezeit erhörst; doch um der umstehenden Menge willen habe ich es gesagt, damit sie glauben, dass du mich gesandt hast.
43 Und als er dies gesagt hatte, rief er mit lauter Stimme: Lazarus, komm heraus!
44 Und der Verstorbene kam heraus, an Händen und Füßen mit Grabtüchern umwickelt und sein Angesicht mit einem Schweißtuch umhüllt. Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Bindet ihn los und lasst ihn gehen!
45 Viele nun von den Juden, die zu Maria gekommen waren und sahen, was Jesus getan hatte, glaubten an ihn.
46 Etliche aber von ihnen gingen zu den Pharisäern und sagten ihnen, was Jesus getan hatte.
Der Mordplan des Hohen Rates
47 Da versammelten die obersten Priester und die Pharisäer den Hohen Rat und sprachen: Was sollen wir tun? Denn dieser Mensch tut viele Zeichen!
48 Wenn wir ihn so fortfahren lassen, werden alle an ihn glauben; und dann kommen die Römer und nehmen uns das Land und das Volk weg!
49 Einer aber von ihnen, Kajaphas, der in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war, sprach zu ihnen: Ihr erkennt überhaupt nichts,
50 und ihr bedenkt nicht, dass es für uns besser ist, dass ein Mensch für das Volk stirbt, als dass das ganze Volk zugrunde geht!
51 Dies redete er aber nicht aus sich selbst; sondern weil er in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war, weissagte er; denn Jesus sollte für das Volk sterben,
52 und nicht für das Volk allein, sondern auch, um die zerstreuten Kinder Gottes in eins zusammenzubringen.
53 Von jenem Tag an beratschlagten sie nun miteinander, um ihn zu töten.
54 Darum ging Jesus nicht mehr öffentlich unter den Juden umher, sondern zog von dort weg in die Gegend nahe bei der Wüste, in eine Stadt namens Ephraim, und hielt sich dort auf mit seinen Jüngern.
55 Es war aber das Passah der Juden nahe. Und viele aus dem ganzen Land gingen vor dem Passah nach Jerusalem hinauf, um sich zu reinigen.
56 Da suchten sie Jesus und sprachen zueinander, als sie im Tempel standen: Was meint ihr, kommt er nicht zu dem Fest?
57 Sowohl die obersten Priester als auch die Pharisäer hatten aber einen Befehl gegeben, dass, wenn jemand wisse, wo er sei, er es anzeigen solle, damit sie ihn ergreifen könnten.

Lázár halála
11 Betániában lakott egy Lázár nevű férfi, két testvérével, Mártával és Máriával. Lázár egyszer megbetegedett. 2 (Mária volt az, aki illatos olajjal kente meg és a hajával törölte meg az Úr lábát.) 3 Lázár nővérei megüzenték Jézusnak: „Uram, a barátod, akit szeretsz, beteg.”
4 Amikor Jézusnak átadták az üzenetet, ezt mondta: „Ez a betegség nem halálos, hanem Isten dicsőségét szolgálja. Ezáltal az Isten Fia fog dicsőséget kapni.” 5 Jézus valóban szerette Mártát, Máriát, és Lázárt. 6 Amikor azonban Jézusnak megmondták, hogy Lázár beteg, még két napig ugyanazon a helyen maradt. 7 Azután ezt mondta a tanítványainak: „Menjünk ismét Júdeába!”

Jézus Betániában
17 Amikor Jézus megérkezett Betániába, megtudta, hogy Lázárt már négy nappal korábban egy sziklasírba temették. 18 Mivel Betánia csak három kilométerre volt Jeruzsálemtől, 19 a júdeabeliek közül sokan elmentek Mártához és Máriához, hogy vigasztalják őket a testvérük halála miatt.
20 Amikor Márta meghallotta, hogy Jézus közeledik, eléje sietett, Mária pedig otthon maradt. 21 Amikor Márta Jézushoz ért, ezt mondta: „Uram, ha itt lettél volna, nem halt volna meg a testvérem! 22 De most is biztos vagyok benne, hogy bármit kérsz Istentől, megadja neked.”
23 Jézus ezt felelte: „Fel fog támadni a testvéred.”

Keze és lába vászonlepedőkkel volt körültekerve, arcát pedig kendő takarta.
„Szabadítsátok ki a vásznakból, hadd menjen!” — mondta Jézus.
A vallási vezetők Jézus megöletését tervezik(A)
45 Ennek hatására sokan hittek benne azok közül a júdeabeliek közül, akik Máriát a sírhoz kísérték, és látták, amit Jézus tett. 46 Néhányan közülük elmentek a farizeusokhoz, és nekik is elmondták, hogy Jézus feltámasztotta Lázárt. 47 Emiatt a főpapok és a farizeusok összehívták a Főtanácsot. Amikor összegyűltek, ezt kérdezték egymástól: „Most mitévők legyünk? Ez az ember tényleg sok csodát tesz! 48 Ha engedjük, hogy ezt folytassa, a végén majd mindenki hinni fog benne! 11 Dans le village de Béthanie vivaient deux sœurs, Marthe et Marie, ainsi que leur frère Lazare.
2 Marie était cette femme qui, après avoir répandu une huile parfumée sur les pieds du Seigneur, les lui avait essuyés avec ses cheveux[a]. Lazare, son frère, tomba malade. 3 Les deux sœurs envoyèrent donc quelqu’un à Jésus pour lui faire dire : Seigneur, ton ami est malade.
4 Quand Jésus apprit la nouvelle, il dit : Cette maladie n’aboutira pas à la mort, elle servira à glorifier Dieu ; elle sera une occasion pour faire apparaître la gloire du Fils de Dieu.
5 Or Jésus était très attaché à Marthe, à sa sœur et à Lazare. 6 Après avoir appris qu’il était malade, il resta encore deux jours à l’endroit où il se trouvait. 7 Puis il dit à ses disciples : Retournons en Judée.
8 – Maître, lui dirent-ils, il n’y a pas si longtemps, ceux de la Judée voulaient te lapider, et maintenant tu veux retourner là-bas ?
9 – N’y a-t-il pas douze heures dans une journée ? répondit Jésus. Si l’on marche pendant qu’il fait jour, on ne bute pas contre les obstacles, parce qu’on voit clair. 10 Mais si l’on marche de nuit, on trébuche parce qu’il n’y a pas de lumière.
11 Après avoir dit cela, il ajouta : Notre ami Lazare s’est endormi ; je vais aller le réveiller.
12 Sur quoi les disciples lui dirent : Seigneur, s’il dort, il est en voie de guérison.
13 En fait, Jésus voulait dire que Lazare était mort, mais les disciples avaient compris qu’il parlait du sommeil ordinaire. 14 Alors il leur dit clairement : Lazare est mort, 15 et je suis heureux, à cause de vous, de n’avoir pas été là-bas à ce moment-là. Car cela contribuera à votre foi. Mais maintenant, allons auprès de lui.
16 Thomas, surnommé le Jumeau, dit alors aux autres disciples : Allons-y, nous aussi, pour mourir avec lui.
17 A son arrivée, Jésus apprit qu’on avait enseveli Lazare depuis quatre jours déjà. 18 Béthanie était à moins de trois kilomètres de Jérusalem, 19 aussi beaucoup de gens étaient-ils venus chez Marthe et Marie pour leur présenter leurs condoléances à l’occasion de la mort de leur frère.
La résurrection et la vie
20 Quand Marthe apprit que Jésus approchait du village, elle alla à sa rencontre. Marie, elle, resta à la maison.
21 Marthe dit à Jésus : Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort. 22 Mais je sais que maintenant encore, tout ce que tu demanderas à Dieu, il te l’accordera.
23 – Ton frère ressuscitera, lui dit Jésus.
24 – Je sais bien, répondit Marthe, qu’il reviendra à la vie au dernier jour, lors de la résurrection.
25 – Moi, je suis la résurrection et la vie, lui dit Jésus. Celui qui place toute sa confiance en moi vivra, même s’il meurt. 26 Et quiconque vit et croit en moi ne mourra jamais. Crois-tu cela ?
27 – Oui, Seigneur, lui répondit-elle, je crois que tu es le Messie, le Fils de Dieu, celui qui devait venir dans le monde.
28 Là-dessus, elle partit appeler sa sœur Marie, et, l’ayant prise à part, elle lui dit : Le Maître est là, et il te demande.
29 A cette nouvelle, Marie se leva précipitamment et courut vers Jésus. 30 Il n’était pas encore entré dans le village : il était resté à l’endroit où Marthe l’avait rencontré. 31 Ceux qui se trouvaient dans la maison avec Marie pour la consoler la virent se lever brusquement et sortir. Ils la suivirent, pensant qu’elle allait au tombeau pour y pleurer.
32 Marie parvint à l’endroit où était Jésus. Dès qu’elle le vit, elle se jeta à ses pieds et lui dit : Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort.
33 En la voyant pleurer, elle et ceux qui l’accompagnaient, Jésus fut profondément indigné[b] et ému.
34 – Où l’avez-vous enterré ? demanda-t-il.
– Viens, Seigneur, lui répondirent-ils, tu verras.
35 Jésus pleura.
36 Alors tous dirent : Voyez, comme il l’aimait.
37 Quelques-uns remarquaient : Il a bien rendu la vue à l’aveugle, n’aurait-il pas pu empêcher que Lazare meure ?
La victoire sur la mort
38 Une fois de plus, Jésus fut profondément bouleversé. Il arriva au tombeau. C’était une grotte dont l’entrée était fermée par une pierre[c].
39 – Enlevez la pierre, dit Jésus.
Marthe, la sœur du mort, dit alors : Seigneur, il doit déjà sentir. Cela fait quatre jours qu’il est là.
40 Jésus lui répondit : Ne t’ai-je pas dit : Si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu ?
41 On ôta donc la pierre. Alors Jésus, tournant son regard vers le ciel, dit : Père, tu as exaucé ma prière et je t’en remercie. 42 Pour moi, je sais que tu m’exauces toujours, mais si je parle ainsi, c’est pour que tous ceux qui m’entourent croient que c’est toi qui m’as envoyé.
43 Cela dit, il cria d’une voix forte : Lazare, sors de là !
44 Et voici que le mort sortit du tombeau : il avait les pieds et les mains entourés de bandes de lin, le visage recouvert d’un linge.
Jésus dit à ceux qui étaient là : Déliez-le de ces bandes et laissez-le aller !
Le complot contre le Maître de la vie(A)
45 En voyant ce que Jésus avait fait, beaucoup de ceux qui étaient venus auprès de Marie crurent en lui. 46 Quelques-uns, cependant, s’en allèrent trouver les pharisiens et leur rapportèrent ce que Jésus avait fait.
47 Alors, les chefs des prêtres et les pharisiens convoquèrent le Grand-Conseil.
– Qu’allons-nous faire ? disaient-ils. Cet homme accomplit trop de signes miraculeux ; 48 si nous le laissons faire de la sorte, tout le monde va croire en lui. Alors les Romains viendront et détruiront notre temple et notre peuple.
49 L’un d’eux, qui s’appelait Caïphe, et qui était grand-prêtre cette année-là, prit la parole : Vous n’y entendez rien, leur dit-il. 50 Vous ne voyez pas qu’il est de votre intérêt qu’un seul homme meure pour le peuple, pour que le peuple ne disparaisse pas tout entier ?
51 Or ce qu’il disait là ne venait pas de lui ; mais il était grand-prêtre cette année-là, et c’est en cette qualité qu’il prophétisa qu’il fallait que Jésus meure pour son peuple. 52 Et ce n’était pas seulement pour son peuple qu’il devait mourir, c’était aussi pour rassembler tous les enfants de Dieu dispersés à travers le monde et les réunir en un seul peuple.
53 C’est ce jour-là qu’ils prirent la décision de faire mourir Jésus. 54 Jésus cessa donc de se montrer en public. Il partit de là et se retira dans la région voisine du désert, dans une ville nommée Ephraïm[d]. Il y passa quelque temps avec ses disciples.
55 Comme la fête de la Pâque approchait, beaucoup de gens de tout le pays montaient à Jérusalem avant la fête pour se soumettre aux cérémonies rituelles de purification. 56 Ils cherchaient donc Jésus et se demandaient entre eux, dans la cour du Temple : Qu’en pensez-vous ? Croyez-vous qu’il viendra à la fête ?
57 Or, les chefs des prêtres et les pharisiens avaient donné des instructions : si quelqu’un savait où se trouvait Jésus, il devait les prévenir pour qu’on l’arrête.
