17 So (A)the [a]people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. 18 (B)For this reason also the [b]people went to meet Him, (C)because they heard that He had performed this [c]sign. 19 So the Pharisees said [d]to one another, “You see that you are not accomplishing anything; look, the world has gone after Him!”

Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now there were some (D)Greeks among those who were going up to worship at (E)the feast; 21 these people then came to (F)Philip, who was from (G)Bethsaida of Galilee, and were making a request of him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip *came and *told (H)Andrew; then Andrew and Philip *came and *told Jesus. 23 But Jesus *answered them by saying, (I)The hour has come for the Son of Man to (J)be glorified. 24 Truly, truly I say to you, (K)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 (L)The one who loves his [e]life loses it, and the one who (M)hates his [f]life in this world will keep it [g]to eternal life. 26 If anyone [h]serves Me, he must follow Me; and (N)where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone [i]serves Me, the Father will (O)honor him.

Jesus Foretells His Death

27 (P)Now My soul has become troubled; and what am I to say? ‘(Q)Father, save Me from (R)this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 (S)Father, glorify Your name.” Then a (T)voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “(U)An angel has spoken to Him!” 30 Jesus responded and said, (V)This voice has not come for My sake, but for yours. 31 (W)Now judgment is upon this world; now (X)the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I (Y)am lifted up from the earth, will (Z)draw all people to Myself.” 33 Now He was saying this (AA)to indicate what kind of death He was going to die. 34 The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard from (AB)the Law that (AC)the [j]Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, ‘The (AD)Son of Man must be (AE)lifted up’? Who is this (AF)Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, (AG)For a little while longer (AH)the Light is among you. (AI)Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who (AJ)walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the Light, (AK)believe in the Light, so that you may become (AL)sons of Light.”

These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and (AM)hid Himself from them. 37 But though He had performed so many [k]signs in their sight, they still were not believing in Him. 38 This happened so that the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke would be fulfilled: “(AN)Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, 40 (AO)He has blinded their eyes and He (AP)hardened their heart, so that they will not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and [l]be converted, and so I will not heal them.” 41 These things Isaiah said because (AQ)he saw His glory, and (AR)he spoke about Him. 42 Nevertheless (AS)many, even of (AT)the rulers, believed in Him, but (AU)because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, so that they would not be (AV)excommunicated from the synagogue; 43 (AW)for they loved the [m]approval of people rather than the [n]approval of God.

44 Now Jesus cried out and said, (AX)The one who believes in Me, does not believe only in Me, but also in Him who sent Me. 45 And (AY)the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (AZ)I have come as Light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me will remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears My [o]teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for (BA)I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 (BB)The one who rejects Me and does not [p]accept My [q]teachings has one who judges him: (BC)the word which I spoke. That will judge him on (BD)the last day. 49 (BE)For I did not speak [r]on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me (BF)has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that (BG)His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak (BH)just as the Father has told Me.”

17 Now the crowd that was with him(A) when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign,(B) went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”(C)

Jesus Predicts His Death

20 Now there were some Greeks(D) among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida(E) in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

23 Jesus replied, “The hour(F) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.(G) 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,(H) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it(I) for eternal life.(J) 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.(K) My Father will honor the one who serves me.

27 “Now my soul is troubled,(L) and what shall I say? ‘Father,(M) save me from this hour’?(N) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven,(O) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,(P) not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world;(Q) now the prince of this world(R) will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up[a] from the earth,(S) will draw all people to myself.”(T) 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.(U)

34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(V) that the Messiah will remain forever,(W) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(X) must be lifted up’?(Y) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(Z) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(AA) before darkness overtakes you.(AB) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(AC) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(AD)

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(AE) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

“Lord, who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”[b](AF)

39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

40 “He has blinded their eyes
    and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
    nor understand with their hearts,
    nor turn—and I would heal them.”[c](AG)

41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(AH) and spoke about him.(AI)

42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(AJ) But because of the Pharisees(AK) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(AL) 43 for they loved human praise(AM) more than praise from God.(AN)

44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(AO) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(AP) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(AQ) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(AR) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(AS) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(AT) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(AU) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(AV)

17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

20 And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:

21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,

40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:

43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.

45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
