He came as a (A)witness, to bear witness about the light, (B)that all might believe through him. (C)He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

(D)The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet (E)the world did not know him. 11 He came to (F)his own,[a] and (G)his own people[b] (H)did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, (I)who believed in his name, (J)he gave the right (K)to become (L)children of God, 13 who (M)were born, (N)not of blood (O)nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And (P)the Word (Q)became flesh and (R)dwelt among us, (S)and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son[c] from the Father, full of (T)grace and (U)truth. 15 ((V)John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, (W)‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 For from (X)his fullness we have all received, (Y)grace upon grace.[d]
