⁶ There was a man sent from God whose name was John.^{(A) 7} He came as a witness to testify^(B) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.^{(C) 8} He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

⁹ The true light^(D) that gives light to everyone^(E) was coming into the world. ¹⁰ He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,^(F) the world did not recognize him. ¹¹ He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.^{(G) 12} Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed^(H) in his name,^(I) he gave the right to become children of God^(J)— ¹³ children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.^(K)

¹⁴ The Word became flesh^(L) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,^(M) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace^(N) and truth.^(O)

John Testifies About Jesus

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,^(A) who takes away the sin of the world!^{(B) 30} This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’^{(C) 31} I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

³² Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.^{(D) 33} And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water^(E) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’^{(F) 34} I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”^[a](G)

Instructions on Worship

2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,^(A) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— ² for kings and all those in authority,^(B) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness^(C) and holiness. ³ This is good, and pleases^(D) God our Savior,^{(E) 4} who wants^(F) all people^(G) to be saved^(H) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.^{(I) 5} For there is one God^(J) and one mediator^(K) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,^(L)

⁹ The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,^(A) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient^(B) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.^(C)
