5 And (A)the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [a]grasp it.
The Witness John the Baptist
6 A man [b]came, one sent from God, and his name was (B)John. 7 [c]He came [d](C)as a witness, to testify about the Light, (D)so that all might believe through him. 8 [e](E)He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
9 [f]This was (F)the true Light [g]that, coming into the world, enlightens every person.

5 The light shines in the darkness,(A) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(B)
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(C) 7 He came as a witness to testify(D) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(E) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light(F) that gives light to everyone(G) was coming into the world.
